Was checking out a garage sale this last Summer and saw a big orange saw off to the side, walked over and seen it was a 288 xp and figured I wouldn't have enough cash for it , looked at the little sticker on the handle and it said $10 parts!
Grabbed that thing up and tried the pull rope and it was stuck.

Brought it home and tore it down found a bunch of white build up in the crankcase and piston, piston wrist pin and ring were all stuck with this white stuff ( maybe oxidized magnesium?).

Anyway Soaked everything and got it all broke free and cleaned up, put a good bit of 2 stroke oil in the crankcase and reassembled except for the muffler, Gave it a few good pulls and it fired up ( @10pm with no muffler). It's missing the kill switch and didn't have any gas in it, so not sure what it was running on? But had to stick my hand over the carb inlet to get it shut down.

Now I just need a few more parts, has a broken chain brake handle that looks different Than the plastic ones I'm used to and is missing a few safety levers in the handle, also the throttle lever and roller that it rides on for the carb is worn down.

Where would be the best place to find these parts?

My normal firewood saw is a husqvarna 55 , but also have a ms390.

Thanks in advance.20241205_213024.jpg

Have you tried Amazon ?
I looked and found most of the parts, but alot are straight from China and not sure if there junk or not. I ran by my local husqvarna dealer who used to have parts saws that didn't make sense for them to fix and they didn't have any 2XX saws. I'm wondering what other saws would have the same parts?

Pictures of the P/C and inside of case?

Did you rinse out the crankcase well with mix?
Didn't take any pictures as I was in a hurry late in the evening. I used pb blaster and then carb cleaner in the crankcase till nothing else came out and till the bearings ran smooth. Could see some white corrosion in the bottom of the case but scraped It out.

Any idea what I would need to get to swap it over to a plastic chain brake lever?

I have very limited experience with Huskys. You might want to get IPLs for the saw and look up the brake assy parts.

You can get all the 288 parts after market from China or you can get nearly all 288 oem stuff from the dealer (in Australia anyway) but it can take a while. Everything from a 281 except p&c is interchangeable. Or you can hunt around for another parts saw

All parts available OEM out of Brazil- you may have to argue that with your local dealer- but they can still be ordered.

Mind you, quick look of the photos and its a $10 saw- its been there and done that- even the rear tank handle looks twisted- so its really going to need some TLC and dollars thrown at it to make it a goodun again.

The chain break lever is part of clutch cover assembly. Just remove the two bar nuts and remove the assembly with the broken brake handle and bolt on the replacement with the plastic lever.
When it comes to parts from China, one needs to decide if the part has critical aspects or is just little more than a piece of hardware. Throttle linkages, and plastic parts are fine to source from China, pistons, cylinders, bearings, etc. you are better off to shop elsewhere.

If there was so much mag corrosion in the case it locked the saw up, I definitely be taking a hard look at the bearings. The crank big end will suffer as much as the ball bearings-look for pitting. Fortunately, cranks can be had easier than original top ends I think.
