Went out and bought myself an early Christmas present today...A Stihl 460 Magnum.

Holy crap! My next biggest saw is a 50cc Jonsered. I buried the bar in some big black cherry I'd been saving and all I can say is awsome.

I was considering this or a Husky 372/375 or a 575 but I read one comment that sold me on the Stihl. I forget who here said it, but it went something like "A Husky will run the best it will ever right out of the box. A Stihl just keeps getting better.".

It's got a 25" bar on it now but I may get a 28" for it too.

Thanks for all the posts considering these saws...They were very helpful!

Good choice. Speaking of out the box many don't know it but to really break in a Stihl engine it takes about 5 gallons of fuel to do it, not 5 or 10 tank fulls but 5 whole gallons of running. They come out the box very tight. Great Christmas present to yourself, cool beans,

Wow, I'm surprised. You seem to like the little saws. You are done now....You have felt the power...

Good luck with the new saw.

Dolmar 5100 - THAT would be the perfect saw.

Seriously - congrats on the 460. Mine wears a 28" bar, but I wouldn't mind getting a 25 for it, too - that would be a handy bugger.

20 and 24" on mine. Much more user friendly than the 28" on a regular basis. besides, when I need a full 28", I break out the modded 066!!!! lol

I love the balance and feel of the 25" on mine, to me that is just about perfect. Never run the 20", been thinking about it though, is it tail heavy like that Doc? Seems to me that you would have to pick up the back and lean into it to get it to cut?

no, not tail heavy at all. That is standard logger issue in these parts. They cut really well with the 20". It cuts fast too...even with the big sproket

Great gift to self:blob2: , mine wears a 20", 24", and is real happy with both. When ya get it broken in, and the warranty is out, start reading the muffler mod threads and really find out what it can do.

That sounds like a good plan, Ralph. It would be fun to bury a 32", especially if the saw can handle it. Goin to get one myself, and full skip chain, yes?

Yes, get the skip on a stock saw, you will thank me latter. Mine will run full comp with the 32, but.................

Mine pulled a 36" running oregon 72 full comp in a 7' dia poplar and pulled great and cut fast, I one handed the rear handle and just let it sink! only problem was the chain ran a bit on the dry side. I have no doubt yours will pull a 32 full comp in softwood. might go to 1/2 skip in hardwood though.

I should have been more clear about that, run the skip in hardwood. Ralph is correct.
