Ok I have had this Dolmar for a couple of yrs now and would like to present my thoughts on what is going well with this saw and what sucks. My first muliple day falling job I just came off of was as a faller on the Chips fire located on the Plumas and Lassen NF. I was not assigned as a faller but my last 3 days I offered my cutting services since our division was very short handed and all we had were us 2 field observers and the forest dozer who was pushing line. There were alot of fallers on this fire I think somewhere in the number of 20 + sets but they where being kept on the more active high priority sections along hwy 89 on the east side of the fire. So back to the saw. Well I was up around 6800 ft in elevation just south of Soda Ridge in old growth red fir stands. Saw started out cutting very well for the first few trees but I started to notice it kinda bogging out after about 3 big trees. It was most pronouced on the sloping cut. I did not think too much about it at first but it kept getting worse so I pulled the filter and low and behold its all clogged up. Now this seems like a no brainer but with my Shihl it would cut for at least half the day and not get this bad for power loss. Well tapped the filter out like the factory recommends and the glue or whatever is used to hold it to the plastic breaks loose and the element comes totally detached. Not good for the first couple of hrs of cutting. So after some quick duct tape fix I got back in there and kept cutting and found out the fleece cover is what clogs up the worse and almost to the point of the saw being unsafe to cut with especially on backcuts. At this point I came real close to pulling the safety card since the line safety officer was watching me struggle with this saw. Well I pulled off the fleece cover and low and behold the saw cut like a champ. So gotta say for a heavy duty filter system my experiece is from a production standpoint it sucks. I am seriously thinking of how I could rig up a foam filter element or if there are any aftermarket air filters out there for this saw. Since this filter is too weak and flimsy to hold up. I cut for 2 more full days after this and the saw ran fine with the fleece cover off which I know is not the best for it but when your working under a fire weakened tree the last thing I want is a ####ty running saw.
Now for the good part. When I did get the filter issue temporarily corrected this saw cut like a champ. I used a Husky 385 for a few hrs just the see the differnce and wow I went right back to the dolmar jimmy rigged filter and all just because it ran so much better. I was running a 32" bar with full skip round ground chisel. I was working in trees that where 30-50" dbh on ave with big ones being 60-75" dbh and this saw did fine for all these trees. So my conclusion is carry extra filters and hopefully someone will come up with aftermarket filter that will work better. Other than that I was impressed with the power for the weight of the saw. Its nice to be able to make a quick and affective fix in he field. Good job keep up the good work on them fire lines.

I prefer a 7900 to a 385- Powerwise they are pretty close, but the handling of the 7900 is better bc of the weight difference.

I think MCW did a write-up on the HD filter. I believe he (and others) have encountered the same problem with the filter base. I believe Matt reglued the base to the filter and didn't have further problems. It's a a solution that shouldn't be necessary on a OEM HD filter. Me, I don't own a HD filter. I have never seen the need in my cutting conditions.

Treeslingr' did a review on the 7900 a couple of years ago, He said basically the same thing about the air filter.
Looks like they haven't tried to improve it any.

Nice stick. Was that on Collins Pine ground or FS?

Well, have any of you dolmar owners contacted dolmar to see what is up with the filter setup? If it has been going on for years with these falling apart/plugged up filters..something is wrong here. You shouldn't have to cobjob filters on a new pro saw.

Well after tearing apart the filter totally I discovered that the plastic base grooves were not formed deep enough from the mold or whatever they used to make these grooves for the filter pleats to fit into. The top portion was nice and snugly glued and it held up to me rippng it all around the grooves and the pleats stayed intact on that side so its a factory defect that is causing this. I ordered 2 more from Baileys so hope these are not monday or friday versions as well. I do like the idea of trying to rig up a K&N stack to the base somehow so will keep experimenting to see what I can come up with. The tree I cut was on Govt land most of the stuff on Collins land is pretty cut over and the big ones are very far and few between. Some scattered nice SP just north of Mosquito Ridge though these will likely get put down and for logs over the next few monthes since it all burned up. Their land looked nice from a thinning stant point but since they do not do any slash cleanup the fire was tough to deal with as the slash bed was a nice inviting bed for spot fires. Not trying to harp on the private timber companys here but strategic slash cleanup in locations that would help firefighters make a stand would help greatly. Just got to keep in perspective that Northern Cal is currently breaking ERC (energy release component records for fuels conditions so this is an exceptionally dry yr. Tough to watch such nice timber stands burn up. There will be some green timber left over most of the burn but the worst of it was the drainages that come out of the Feather River canyon they took a pretty good beating. Will be the place for some short term work over the next few yrs as this salvage is taking place. Lets hope we can get in salvage more than we did on the Moonlight Fire though hate to see good sound wood go to waste especially since I know how hard it is get a area reforested. Take care all and thanks for comments

FSburt great review!!!

I could have saved you some time with the air filter. Matt aka MCW and myself experienced the bogging issue just as you did. The pre-filter does what's designed for, it filters everything! it's simply over kill, and it's not needed and I no longer run the pre-filter. Without the pre-filter the system works as well or better than any other HD filter system available for any saw. The paper works so well dust just falls of, no tapping required. I've yet to have a structural issue with the filter, but the fact that others have, has prompted me to consider adding a little epoxy glue to the base of the filter just in case. Honestly it's likely not an issue as long as you don't beat on the filter.

Andre.

Amen on the Moonlight Fire. We had the private ground logged real fast on that one. The FS ground...well, you know how that goes.

Yea I am hoping the govt ground will get a little more salvage done on it but time will tell. I will bet the private ground is already getting prepped for cutting as we speak.

That stand is past due for fire or logging, that country does burn well.

Hey Randy what up with your side of the hill this yr especially the Mendo country they keep breaking fires every other day it seems. You guys are very dry though so that has alot to do with it.

Yup. They'll be mapping the roads before everything cools off. LOL...watch out for the dirty white pickups with lots of antennas on top...traveling at high speed and then stopping unexpectedly.

Some of those drainages you spoke of are cow face steep. I see helicopter sales and yarder work coming up.

The mill in Quincy could use some logs their deck looked kinda skimpy driving by on the way back and forth to fire camp before it moved up the Almanor.

will try to post the video of that lumkin tipping over in the video section. \

Our side of the hill is banana slug damp, but you get just over the first range and it gets crispy.
The Hayfork fire is going well, twice the size since yesterday. Nasty ass country to work in, if the terrain doesn't get you, a tribal member might.
