He says the saw is from the 70's era and wonders would the fuel/mix ratio differ from 50:1 or is it the same as it ever was?

Service manual calls for 25:1 with any old 2 stroke oil or 40:1 with Stihl oil. Mind you that was printed back in the 70s and oils have come a long way. I use 40:1 in my 051.

I bought a Stihl 041 in 1977, used it to cut firewood every winter and do some tree work when necessary since then. I have never had any problems with it and it always starts. I use the new Stihl oil mix for 2.5 gallons. I have always used Stihl oil. I think that the oil quality has more to do with the mix than anything else. I've never seen an article about 2-cycle oil that definitely describes the science of why the oil mix is different for different engines. I have read that it is the oil quality, but I have also read that the mechanics of the engine determine the mix. Maybe someone on this forum knows more about it. I'd be interested to know. Meanwhile I would recommend mixing the Stihl oil as recommended on the bottle, and use at least 87 octane gas, preferably 93.
The 041 has been a great saw for me. I own several newer Stihl saws, but I still use the 041 a lot.

The 041 like all the older Stihls vibrate their screws loose pretty regular. # 271 Loctite is the cure .. If you keep everything snugged up there are a very good saw that seems to run forever.
does it have points or is it electronic ignition.
They were a very popular landing saw in Alaska.
