Carting around big bars is a pain. I leave the 25" bar on the chainsaw all the time, so I needed a carry box for my 42" & 60" bars. I copied the concept from a friend who made one for his 57" bar that was made from thick plywood with the shape routered out of one side. My two blades are heavy enough without a lot of plywood, so I went for a simple tassy oak frame made from 1"x1/2" covered with 3 ply and foam on the inside.

I scored some cheap 1/4" foam, like the stuff you slide on at water parks so I wouldn't have any problems with the fuel/oil, thus 2 layers in each side. The top layer on one side was then cut way to suit the shape of the bars. It wasn't till after I had glued in the foam I noticed I had put the big bar on the wrong side (ie on top as you carry the box), but the bars seam to stay in place Ok. I've just got the auxillary oiler bolt sitting at one end of the bar at the moment, I might make a small slot for them in the foam.

Of course, blue to match the colour scheme of the mill

Good idea I like it.

Thanks for the pics.

Great idea... you put that much money into a large quality bar, you want to protect it against getting banged around to and from milling. Great.

Thanks for the comments.

Looks good!

I'm thinking of a rack in the "back-o-the-van" . Kinda like the gun rack on the pickup parcel shelf :)

Great idea for a van/pick-up, I did think of that for the trailer, but I don't always have my trailer a tow. I have one of those large gal tool boxes in the car for the chainsaw and equipment, but the big bar didn't fit, and a rack wasn't really a good thing for the station wagon :) .

I made this bar case for when I go on a road trip to mill. It is to help protect them and the mills rails from getting bent in transport.

Its basically a box 1" deep with 1/2 fir plywood top and bottom. I got to use some of my milled wood for the rails of the box sitka spruce. The mill rails and push tube are 1" so they are on the sides. I cut a template for the bottom out of 1/4" plywood for my 50" & 36" bars. Next a layer of 7/16 OSB as a spacer between layers. Next another 1/4" plywood template for the 28" bar and room for a possible 60" bar someday? Its held together with 1/4" screws with insert nuts on the bottom.

This should make easy storage and transport for my 2 week trip to the coast that should include some milling. I have to brake down everything for compact travel. I will get everything else in another small wood box 088, 365, gas, oil, chains, mill and safety equipment. Not to mention kids, dog, Christmas presents and stuff for the family for two weeks. Oh ya the wife to.

What have you got stacked beside the bar case? Red alder - birch - maple?

Nice work DRB!

I made a bar box about this time last year, complete overkill as usual. The thing can carry 4 x 60" bars - if I fill it full of bars I can barely lift it!

Great work on the bar box. Much better than just throwing them in the back...they look very well cared for in a nice case.

What do you do with the chains? Mine are always a pain. Whenever I want to use one...I have to spend 5 minutes sorting it out as it gets itself inside out sort of..when stored loose in a box. I haven't been cut during the wrestling match...yet. I bet I look like a complete knob messing about with my chain trying not to force it upon itself...sure feel like one.

Small ones (36" or less) I wrap around my hand and put them inside old thick socks. Larger (42") I use large take away chinese food containers. 60" chains I use the 25' cardboard rolls that the bulk chain came on.

Here's the box I threw together to hold all of my chainsaw stuff except the 60" bar.

The smaller one holds all of my stump grinder teeth and tools:

Nice I never thought of standing them on edge

I put wrap them in a rag then store them in heavy zip lock parts bags I get from work. This keeps them from getting dull and the bag keeps them dry when I am out in the rain or snow.

OK, that looks like a slick way to carry chains as well as bars. No mistake as to which chain goes with which bar...no tangled mess either. I usually hike my stuff in and don't always have a bar on my 660 until I'm ready to mill. Something like that could stay in the truck then I could pick and choose. Don't quite have that many chains though.

Geez...this milling hobby is increasing my workload. Aux oiler project almost done, Trick mounts for my ladder/starter board, sharping games/grinder, A tach so I don't waste my saw, now a case to put my stuff in. Good job it's too cold for me to cut around here. You guys are not helping.
