Here is my stash for this winter. Got about 7.5 cords so far, 2 shagbark hickory (cut may), 1 junk (cut may), 1 maple (cut june), 3.5 red oak (cut june and july). Last picture is of the dead oak that needs to come down. Since it has to be dropped on a narrow alley I need to get a pro or a logger friend to come down it for me. That should put me up to 10 cords for the winter.

Stacked the knotty stuff on top of the closest row. Whoops, wind got it last night.

Enjoy!!

Hmmm... Seems like about four or five full cords at most. Are you talking about full cords (128 cubic feet) or face cords? Of course, I could be wrong.

Yep, full cords. I have about 175 linear feet, all cut at 16" and about 4 feet high.

(175 ft * 4 ft * (16/12) ft) / 128 ft3 = 7.27 cords plus the garbage on top of the closest stack = 7.5 cords

Unless my math is wrong....

Well, your math is OK and the total is valid if you have 175 linear feet stacked. Hard to tell from the PICS. So, you think you can get another 2.5 cords from that dead oak tree? If you do, you have a spectacular collection of good firewood. Keep some softer wood around to mix with the oak and hickory. :greenchainsaw:

I agree, it does not look like that much when i looked at the pictures again. The closet stack is the shortest, about 12.5 ft. The other two stacks (four to six rows in places) are actually about 2.5 times longer, about 33 feet, you just can't see them from the picture, the ornamental grass is hiding them.

Hoping to get 2.5 from the oak, it is pretty big at the bottom. Maybe 24-30" diameter??? We'll see, might only get 1.5 cords out of it. This is my first year cutting up firewood, so I have a hard time telling how much wood is coming out of a tree until it is all split up.

Either does anybody else. The center of that oak tree could be eaten half up by carpenter ants and be almost hollow. That's common with soft maple in this neck of the woods, but even oak is a target now and then.

Much depends on how long that tree has been dead. Oak takes a long time to dry rot compared to most species, so it's probably in pretty good shape.

I once cut down a 60' tall dead ash tree about 24" dia. at the base. The first billet log I could use was 10' up from the trunk. Carpenter ants had devoured everything from that point down to the ground. It's a wonder the tree was even standing. After felling, the chain was dull as a butter knife from cutting through the black pitch that was 20" thick. Cutworms inside were 2" long and 3/4" in diameter. Lord knows how long they had been living inside that tree, feasting on whatever the carpenter ants had left behind. :dizzy:
