I just bought a used Stihl 046 magnum, & it will not idle down. Tried turning the idle screw, & the high & low limits, & it doesn`t change at all. What gives? I have 2 other stihls, Just got a good deal on this saw.
Thanks:angry:

Be suspicious of an air leak if you cant close throttle plate enough to make it idle it is getting air somewhere else.

I was kind of thinking that. The saw has great compression, & is in overall good condition. I bought it for a good price, & was going to use it for a spare( I have another 046 mag as well).
Thanks

1 more place to look. Remove the air fliter flange and the black baffle under it so you can see the carburetor. Clean all around it, especially around where the throttle shaft contacts the idle speed screw. Have seen sawdust build up there and hold the throttle plate open slightly. Acts just like an air leak. Actually, it is.

Does that model have an air impluse tube between the crankcase and the carb?

If so, I would check that.

My used 024 had you same EXACT problem. Wouldn't idle to matter what. Turned out the impulse tube was rotted/ripped in 5 places. I put in a new one and now it idles fine.

:blob2: I fixed the problem. The intake manifold was cracked. I also put a new pulse tube in also, since i had it apart anyway.
Thanks to all for the help.

Why bother?

I duct tape all my throttle triggers wide open, this increases chain speed and cutting time, also more fun while climbing, with the saw swinging on my lanyard wide open!:D

Just like Nascar, real men never lift!
