One in the usual spot under the cab, and the second one smack in the middle of the chip bin. Sure wish I'd thought this out a bit better before buying the spare! Anyone got any ideas about how I can get it unloaded? It's heavy as all get up and I've got nobody to give me a hand unloading it. There are no overhead structures/trees where I've got to get it off the truck. The truck is a tipper and I dont have an engine hoist. It's been in there a few days now, really need to get it out.

fab up a quick wooden Aframe
buy a $150 hoist from HF
"rent" a hoist from autozone etc (may even be free)
be nicer, you'll have more friends. Friends will help you ;)

I gave my friend an old 350 motor a couple years ago. I hauled it to his house on my 6x12 trailer. We couldnt figure out how to unload it without possible damage (he didnt have a hoist). Our solution? Beer cans. No kidding. He had endless bags of uncrushed beer cans and i said lets roll it onto them. It worked great! The cans absorbed the motor very gently. J:cool2:ust put the cans in a heavy duty yard bag and you're set.

Another insane conundrum like so many we are faced with. The most productive way to handle it is to invest in the tools you need to do the job you committed yourself to doing.

Craigslist always has great deals on equipment like that, I always seem to find what I need when i need it.

I picked up a brand new engine stand for 40 bucks, when i was done with it I listed it back on CL and it was sold for 35.If you are going to work on the motor you are really going to want the right stuff... or you'll be sorry.:msp_biggrin:

get you a come-a-long or a chain hoist and drag it to the back of the bed as close to the edge as possible then figure a way to fasten the come-a-long or chain hoist to the top of the chip bin and the motor and lift the motor off the bed then raise the dumb bed all the way up and that should give you clearance to lower the motor via the come-a-long or chain hoist to the ground or a stand, of course this won't work unless you have a box that will support the weight.....

Thanks for all the helpful hints guys! Some good ones to keep stored away for future reference in there ;-)

I ended up piling up about 4 spare truck tyres behind the tray then a plank of wood on top and slid the motor out onto the plank. I strapped it down to the top tyre with a ratchet strap so should be good for a while until I get a hoist sorted. Those things sure are heavy!
