I took a look through the archives, but I couldn't find an answer to quite this question: What are the deep mechanical differences between the Poulan 25 series (round starter) and Micro XXV (square starter) saws?

The reason I ask is that the local dump provided a yellow Poulan S25 Pro today. From around 1986, I think. Lots of use but compression is great and it runs fine. I already have a Sears/Poulan Micro XXV--just trying to fine out if the S25 Pro's extra quality is worth the weight.

Anyway, it needs a muffler and muffler cover to be decent. Next tier down would be a starter cover, and maybe a clutch cover and front handlebar.

Thanks

I'm told that there are some minor differences in the various models that prevent a total parts interchange but the basic design was way ahead of its time -the 25 traces back to the Beaird(sp?) saws. Poulan bought the design and it became a staple item that grew the little saw company from Shreveport for a long time.

I am quite sure the engine is the same. My in-law's Husky 23 Compact (early-mid 90's vintage) has the same power as my S25. Both can handle a buried 16" bar easily.

I had to replace the starter pawl on my 25, somehow a local sled dealer here that used to be a Poulan dealer still had one.
The muffler on mine also liked to come off when I first got it, some red loctite keeps it where it belongs now

Thanks guys. I know that the engine parts are different on mine. The cylinder castings are completely different and the XXV has a one-ring piston. Not sure how the basic quality varies.
