Attempted to mill out this Lemon Scented Gum, before starting ran the metal detector over it. So far have been lucky until now the detector had a song to sing all over the log.

Although we knew there were objects in there, was hard to pinpoint any thing to dig out till exposed, some where buried quiet deep.

Got to the point where a decision had to be made, put big holes in the slab trying to located the object or just mill through it and hope there is not a star post hidden beneath.

In some places it was just copper wire, others nails that had long gone & just the staining left within the log. Managed to dig out a few, the others simply had to be left for the chain to decide

That log looks more like a spotted gum (Corymbia Maculata) than the LSG (Corymbia Citriodora). They are of course very similar with the bigger fruit (nuts) for the SG being one of the few clear discriminators.

How was the chain after hitting the nails?

BTW If you want to stop the stains spreading any further you could paint the areas with Oxalic acid - available at most big hardware stores.

Bob you could be right about the species, I wouldn't know.

The chain was slightly damaged from what I could see at the time, yet to sit down and sharpen. Am using stihl semi chisel so think that helped.

Thanks for the Oxalic acid tip
