Name that Pest! (and how to treat?)

We moved to this home a year ago and have a lovely red maple in our front yard (zone 4, mid-Atlantic), but I discover the trunk is pretty open and wounded by some type of boring pest :/ (see pictures)
Any ideas what did this and anything I could do to help this tree along? It’s still mostly healthy looking but I’m afraid this trunk situation will lead to an early demise. Thanks for any help!

Looks like an old injury (lightning?) and then the bugs got to it. Tree looks healthy so other that keeping future bugs out and trying to keep it dry somehow, let it continue to heal and enjoy it while you can.

Thanks a lot @capetrees , lightning wouldn't have occurred to me at all.
As for keeping bugs out, is there a particular bark spray or mixture you recommend, or are you not a fan of spraying trunks? I've read differing opinions...

If anything, go lightweight like organic stuff. The dead wood doesn't look like it's active currently to any bugs but just try to keep any new ones away.
