Has anyone heard of this? Comments? In our area the County is preparing to conduct an Urban Forests Survey. They tell us to look at this website to fully realize the unharvested benefits of the forest but the link does not work. This is I believe the first step in prohibiting harvest of any timber in what is called our Urban Growth Areas. We own 12 acres which is 2/3 forested with mature Doug Fir, Maple, Alder, and Hemlock. It has been appraised at previous prices at around $50,000 harvested. I have not done so since I would rather look at trees than stumps or pasture. I fear our county's latest move is just another way to steal assets from landowners.

Nope. Haven't heard of that. I will put in a plug for an organization you might want to join. The Washington Farm Forestry Association does some lobbying to try to protect land rights. They put on once a month meetings where you could perhaps find out what is going on. They keep pretty up to date on what is going on.

I'm not seeing a King County chapter.

Even worse, were in the liberal enclave of Thurston, where the city dwelling residents of Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater select our county officials.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into it.

For some reason, I was thinking you were even more unfortunate and lived in King County.

Thurston is getting close to here. :msp_ohmy:
Don't remind me. Several years back I snuck in a new septic system. Paid a friend about 5 grand. If I'd gone through King Ct. it would have cost me 15 to 20 grand.

They are serious. Thing is, the range of the Mazama Pocket Gopher's habitat in the southern Puget Sound region is so degraded and fragmented that only four or five places have sufficient area to maintain any population at all, and those areas are already well-protected. To try to create new habitat by legislation is basically Eminent Domain, and I can't get behind that.

Here is the largest, most integrated plan that I know of to restore and preserve South Puget prairie habitat. I know TNC has bought up a lot of Black River land just west of Glacial Heritage County Park (Thurston County) and Mima Mounds (DNR), but I'm not sure if that'll be included in the overall ACUB plan. Thing about our ACUB is that it is so far largely focused on prairie and oak savanna/woodland ecosystems, and not much else. So you've got JBLM proper, Scatter Creek, Bald Hill Lake and environs, and the other two already mentioned. Sorry, Gophers, that's probably about all you get. Nothin' personal.

Eminent Domain takings would be far preferable to what they are doing now. They are taking with no compensation by declaring your property unusable. Then it becomes useless (except to the environmentalists) but they still want their property taxes. Don't pay your taxes and the County takes it away from you. Unfortunately we have Larry, Moe, and Curly Joe as County Commissioners.
