A while back the Comcast repair guy was out at my house and I happened to be home. We got to talking and I ended up showing him some of my equipment and some of the wood I've milled.

Fast forward to just a few weeks ago. He didn't have my number but remembered where I live. He asked if I would slab up a log for him. He told me what he had and I told him I would do it.

He brought over an oak log about 10'-11' long and about 22" in diameter. He also had a smaller crotch piece from the same tree.

It was a tree that had died earlier this year and he had it cut down.

He wanted to make something out (park bench) of it because this was the tree that his son played in when he was growing up. His son was recently killed in a car crash. It even still had some string sticking out of the middle of the log from where his son had tied something to a limb many years ago. (Didn't get a picture of that.)

Anyways, it's nothing fancy but I thought that was a really neat story.

Here's the log. I cut it into 3 4" thick slabs. Before I slabbed it, I trimmed it down to 9' long and put some anchor seal on the ends.

that is a touching story. my cousin's young son was recently killed in a car crash and it's been really important to their family to find positive outlets for their anger/grief. it's cool that you could help in providing one for this fella...

Nice job but a sad story.

That was a very nice story. And good job! Thats a mighty pretty piece of wood. I'm sure the man will be proud.

Way to go Scott !

A while back, I posted a story about sawing some Red Cedar for a customer and asking what he had planned for the wood. He told me about his lifelong friend that was about to die from cancer and that he was going to build a casket for his friend to be buried in. I really took my time sawing those logs to give him the best boards I could. I felt it was an honor to be allowed to saw that lumber for him. I'm guessing you were touched the same way.
