Bastard Child

I've heard a few things about the 042 that aren't very good. I hear they have some cylinder issues with them and they are the bastard child of the 048. I would have your customer opt for the 038 or 048.
Take care,
Brad

P.S.: 042's are really ???? rare and it would probably be pretty difficult to find a muffler for one.

I know nothing about the 042's. I am just trying to help a client out. It never hurts to ask and if I'm going to find one anywhere it will be on this forum.

As for the 042 being a "bastrd" child and being rare I believe you will find the 042 and 048 are built along the same lines. Neither the 042 or 048 appear to have been built in large numbers. It would be my assumption that the muffler from a 048 would probably fit the 042. I have a 042 here but I need to hang on to it. The parts saws show up on ebay often so keep your eyes out for one. I know there is a complete and running 048 on ebay right now.

Re 042's

What I heard about the 042's is that stihl experimented with a different cylinder that tends to get egg shaped over time. I've heard it from two dealers, but I'm not sure myself personally because I haven't seen it.

042-048 muffler

042-048 muffler; The muffler for Stihl 042,and 048 are the same. The part number is 1117-140-0612,this a 2 part assembley of parts 1117-145-0702[inlet side]and 1117-145-0802 [outlet side] and also an internal screen. The subject arises about the durability of these saws quite often.I have 2 of the 048's and 1 042 and can only add, that they are little powerhouses. The 048's came from the west coast and were probabley used by timbermen, and the 042 came from Ill. and was used by an arborist.Considering the type of service they were subjected to and the fact that they still run like race horses, this proves ,at least to me,that there is some degree of design in this model.Al

042

This saw ws the forerunner to the 028,038 line. They found the 4 screws in the case were not enough, but the advent of torx screws with locking teeth pretty much cured the problem. I started replacing the slotted head screws, and the case gasket stayed in then. The durability stems from the screws loosening. Torx in the original saws would have cured the problem. They were definitley powerful enough.
I have enough lying around, a modded one was a thought, but the age factor and parts made me think twice about it.
