Looking for a new bar for my 880 to mill with on my granberg 36" mill. It came with a 25" but was looking for a 42". Should I go that big or get 1 smaller. Don't want to get a shorter bar then wish I had gotten one longer later on. Ordered a Stihl bar from a fella off of ebay last month but got nothing and had to file a claim against him. Should I go to a .375 or go with a .404 gauge bar and chain for that length? Don't have a lot of extra cash at this time and was also wanting a new 32" bar for my 660. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can always use a longer bar to cut smaller logs, but you can't stretch out a smaller bar for the bigger logs!

Baileys, and look at their specials, I got a 32" for my 660's a while back on closeout for about half the price of regular.

In general I reckon bar size should be chosen on the basis of the size of the logs you generally mill. From a practical perspective a 42" bar means a max of 36" cut and in practice a 30" max diam log. Biggern that and the stuff just gets too hard to handle without power assistance. I'd also say 3/8 over 404.

I chose a 60" cannon 3/8 .63 because we and help is nice cut mostly larger stuff . I made a smaller one using a 36 " cuts 27 '' this is nice when milling alone , and quicker to grab when needing a few small slabs for projects .

Bailey's - 36" Carlton Premium Sprocket Tip Bar

Just got one of these and changed the tip to 3/8. You will not find a better deal. Big jump to go to 42 cost wise.

I use 115 drive link 3/8, 063 chain with my 088. Also I clean the clear-coat away from the rails before I use the bar, makes a mess if the clear coat dripped into the groove.

That large mount kinda throws it into the high dollar bars too. Will still look around and see what I can find. May go with the 36" carlton bar, that should get me thru about anything I would be milling.
