First time buying climbing gear, and want to get a setup to start climbing in my free time and eventually move on to cutting on trees.

Was looking at picking up one of the kits Bailey's offers. Here are the two I have been eyeing -

Bailey's - Basic Spur Climbing Kit

Bailey's - Standard Spur Climbing Kit

Not sure what size to get, I normally wear a 33' waist for pants size, will that translate over to a small or medium harness size?

Thanks for any help,

Jake

Start climbing without spurs. If you're spiking up a tree, then you should be cutting it down.

They have measuring tips in the catalog and on the site. You may get a better answer down in the Arborist 101 forum. I am prolly one of the few people up here that still wear a 4D saddle and you have a better chance of finding someone that has order the kits recently. My advice would be find someone that climbs or even a dealer close by and try a saddle or two on.

I like the 4D's and sliding D's too. They don't get recalled (yet) and they only have three adjustment points to keep track of (waist belt and legs). Because of their heft and surface area, weight distribution from various tools and 660's is even and secure. For whatever reason they are fairly comfortable when blocking down spars as well.

The basic kit equals pain and discomfort. The standard kit equals less pain and discomfort. If you can, try other people's gear before you invest. I would stay away from the basic kit. The pads will cripple you and the saddle will neuter you.

T pads get old in about 5 minutes.
