I inherited a Poulan 306a from a friend of mine. It's a nice saw. I took it apart and cleaned it. It has spark and compression, and when I put mix down the carb it fires up. But I opened the fuel tank to take a look and it's got some shellac and some other funky residue that looks like rust. It is on the cover as well as the tank, so I don't think it is from water. What is it, and how do I get it off of there? The tank was not dry, had some stale fuel ( real stale!) in there. I know this is sketchy info, but I do not know how to describe it. Any help would be appreciated! Also, what size fuel lines does it have? 1/4" I.d.? What can I use for a fuel filter? Thanks.

had the same problem with a PP455.I put toilet bowl cleaner in the tank and sloshed it around a few minutes. After 2 times of repeating this ,it really took care of the problem.Go get 3 or 4 fuel filters, you will need them.Stale fuel will make some funky stuff.

If you put mix in the cylinder and it fires..then you definitely need a carb rebuild kit..

Likely diaphragms are hard and not working. They're cheap..about $15 and easy to install.

Yeah..flush out the tank for sure..!!..and replace the fuel filter..!!

You may also need new gas line and impulse line..both are relatively inexpensive..!!

The 306 doesn't have an impulse line, it feeds the pulse through a hole in the base of the carburetor. What you probably have is a build up of varnish from someone leaving the saw with fuel in the tank for a long period of time. I have cleaned varnish up with gasoline and a brush, some people don't recommend using gasoline for cleaner though.

First of all, empty all that old crap out of the tank. Then take some nuts or washers and put them in the tank. (about 10-15 of them) Fill the tank halfway with kerosene or gas, put the cap on and shake it like crazy for a few minutes. Empty all of the gas or kerosene out and if it still has crap in it, repeat until its clean.
