Hope ya'll can tell me where I might be getting
oil from (I guess it is oil and not mix) that causes
a 394 xp to have smoke curling up from it after
using it for a few minutes.
It is down low in the frame and I can't tell much even
after taking the sides and top covers off.
It runs fine, doesn't miss any. No smoke out of the
muffler. I have been using it with a Timberjig to rip
cedar boards. It's just that after sawing a board, I'll
set it down and after a few seconds you'll see the
smoke start to curl out.
It will do it for a minute or so till it cools down some.
It is not alot but I haven't seen one do it before.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

You asked for help with your husky problem

well the best way to fix a husky is to take chain off put it on a stihl and throw away the rest. ;) Sorry I couldn't resist the perfect oppurtunity for the cheap shot

Good luck

I agree with the others who have suggested sawdust on the engine. It may also be a curly stuck to the barrel. Take the covers off and blow everything out using compressed air. A degreasing may also be in order.

Too much accumulated crud will give you the same result as running lean or significant water in the gas: seizure.

also what color is the smoke? Also as far as cleaning I have the best luck just taking off the top and side cover and going at it with the air hose, just be careful of the air filter, but man it does a bang up job and is very fast.

I appreciate the replys. The chain is new. I got it, sprocket and 28" bar at the same time a few days ago.
Didn't really notice a smell from it. I have the covers
off and will blow it clean and try it again. If it is wood
dust I should be able to tell since cedar gives a nice
aroma off when it burns.
Yeah,I knew I was leaving myself open for a Stihl shot.
Thats ok, I have a 028 Wood Boss that I wouldn't part
with for love or money. Just don't have the resources
for a Stihl with the cc's to rip with at the moment. But
one of these days.......

Cedar does give off a nice aroma. It also dulls chains faster than most other woods.
Milling is very hard on a saw, even when the chain is sharp. Are you letting it idle for a bit to cool down before shutting it off?

i haven't checked the part #'s for the oiler but the 394 seems to put out alot more oil than the 395. make sure the oil hole in the bar is clear, maybe even open it a bit. clean the bar groove for more oil room. when the saw is on the side i bet oil is pooling some where then going on the muffler when you set it upright. i know you want alot of oil when milling but try turning the oiler down a bit and see what happens.

Thanks again for more ideas.
I've been keeping the chain sharp by hitting
it with the file a little after sawing a few boards.
Turning down the oiler sounds good, especially since
I did increase it a little a couple of days ago. Thought
if a little does a little good, alot would do alot of good!
Maybe that will be it.

Have a good one,
