I am about to buy a 630A I know it is an old design and so forth. Anyways the guy has been doing stumps for 30 some years and is finally getting out of it. I can get the 630 for $700, but the engine has lost one cylinder. The engine has not been rebuilt so it could be bored if need be.

I will get all the referals for stumps from him plus what else I can get from advertising locally until the name gets out.

My questions is will the new brigg&stratton 35hp big block engine work as a replacement to the wisconsin engine and still ge the job done?

I am trying to get my foot in the door on this stump grinding without putting out $25K in to a new machine that will take years to pay back. In our area a guy can get by with this unit being a tow behind and down the road if it works out step up to a newer small unit for the stumps that can't be driven to with the vehicle. I also have access to a small tractor as well for the few times I might need to pull it around otherwise.

Has anyone switched the VH4D out for a newer engine with success. Trying to get this done for around of under $4K total.

The Wisconsin engine much better than the briggs, and less modifications. Probably more torque also and that is what grinds stumps, not horsepower. Look around for a rebuilt Wisconsin, they are solid engines. When you find one the rebuilder will probably want yours to rebuild as well. Those 630A were good little machines as long as you can get a truck or tractor to get it set up near the stump. A bit top heavy as well so watch the angles. good luck.
