Hi
I am starting to mill Betula pendula (Silver Birch) lumber.
My question is, if I need 38 mm boards for furniture produktion from the Silver Birch lumber which was fresh cut 50 days ago. How do I start?
I want to mill it, and then dry it to 8-10% humidity, but at what thickness should i mill it, if i want to end with 38 mm thick boards with 8-10% humidity.
Best regards
Jan

If it's green, you'll experience about 4-6% shrinkage due to moisture loss as it dries. If you were to cut 45mm & it shrank, say, 5%, that would bring it down to about 42mm, but as mountainlake stated you might want to cut thicker to allow for some cupping. Though that would depend on the intended use for the lumber - are you leaving it rough or are you going to plane & finish it for finer work?
