Watching it from the high windows in my stove room. Last night, steam coming out of it for about 10 min straight, then off for maybe 4 min, on for 10, off for 4, over and over.

Tonight, on for 12 minutes, off for maybe 3, on for 12, off for 2-3.

My gas furnace ran a little bit when I was out of town Tuesday night, and thats about it. Even down below 0 my beat up old Silver Star is keeping me toasty warm and my gas bill under $20. There will be a lot of households in for a nasty shock this next billing cycle, I know the house next to me will be at least $500.

my boss has been fighting to keep his oilpak system working for a few years now. it always seems to crap out on him when he really needs it! then theres the fact that it costs so darned much to fill up.

you know he used to heat with wood exclusively. i can't figure him out.:)

15* outside 73* inside my place. electric baseboards may have run 3-4 times this season.

Three times this season I've been out back splitting wood and watched the propane man go down my neighbors drive. I stop and think how much wood you could buy already cut and split for the price of about 2100 gallons of propane.:monkey: Then I go back to splitting:givebeer:

yup--bothers me every time i get the ng bill--near nothing--har har!!!!

I cant see my neighbor's chimney. Too bad though, sounds like its a great source of motivation!!

the lady 2 houses down uses oil. when the boiler fires it looks like a huge mushroom cloud i laugh everytime it fires. that thing must be filthy to do that everytime.

Geeze, that thing needs to be cleaned! Probably an old coal boiler, those are horribly inefficient, even with a firebox conversion and a flame retention burner.

Was over at my nephews house on Friday. He said something about his neighbors wood stove that he installed in the rental he's living in. My nephew was laughing about it saying that his neighbor never even told the landlord that he was installing the stove. He apparantly put the stove in his basement, put the stove pipe out the window, then proceeded to run single wall black stovepipe up the side of the split level house on the gable side, and extended it about 2ft. or so above the peak.
Long story short I went to see the install, (by the way this renter is a pretty young guy). His vinyl siding is so melted up the side of his house there is actually large holes in the siding adjacent from the pipe all the way up the side of his house. I can't believe he didn't burn it down. He had to have smelled it burning through the walls of the house. I told my nephew he needs to tell his neighbor to stop using the stove before he burns the whole neighborhood down. It's hard to believe the risks people will take out of ignorance. He needs to study up a little more before attempting something that could have such dire consequences. Hope he gets it right.

Unfortunately as people get desperate to heat their home's they will do some stupid stuff. I would call the fire chief before someone gets killed.

Most of the time people just dont know better.

Personally, I have thought of trying a lot of things that were bad ideas. I guess I always try to ask first and do some research. Arboristsite is good for that.

Somebody should have a chat with that fella.

I m wondering when we will start hearing about house fires from kerosene heaters, open flames on stove burners running constantly and misuse of electric heaters. It also amazes me how many people who don't have a pot to pi$$ in that absolutely have to keep their home at 75 degrees and walk around in a T shirt. Most of them get some kind of assistance to help pay their heat bills, it never occurs to them to turn the heat down a bit and wear warmer clothes. I do not ned assistance for my heating bills, I am my own assistance....

My neighbor across the street has received two oil deliveries since Christmas!

nat gas

my bill 60 bucks hot water and heat for dec9-jan9 700 sqft
i heat with wood as much as i can but not 100%

fathers bill same town 2100sqft 320-350 paid

my math tells me i saved 50 bucks for the sqft and i know he is not keeping the house at 70*plus

Theres days where I know I am saving $15 a day by running the stove nonstop. Those kind of savings add up in a hurry.

My neighbor laughed at me when I got my wood burner. All the work I was doing, building a wood pile in my back yard, going to my parents land to cut fire wood (that parts fun anyways), keeping the fire going.

He asked me a few days ago what my gas bill was last month.... he's not laughing anymore...:jawdrop:

That's funny cuz my neighbor kinda laughed at me when I was buying my junker furnace and fixing it up. Cutting wood, etc. He kinda looked down at me and said " I like the ease of LP" "No hassle". LOL. But in the next sentence he was saying how expensive buying LP was. And I said I could buy about 3 yrs. worth of wood for what it costs to heat the house in one yr. on LP.

Yup, I'm about the same or more. This winter has more than repaid me all the $ I spent on my wood furnace, my splitter and all the $ spent getting wood. I love not getting a LP bill that is more than my house payment.
Someone better get the neighbor straightened out fast or there will be some serious problems. Bet the landloard would boot him out so fast if he knew.
