New bar studs and muffler mod for the Jonsered 920.

I had already swapped some Husky 77 bar studs to the 920 so the Husky bars would be a direct bolt on but they were a little shorter on both ends then I liked so I turned a set up from scratch.

The muffler was quite restricted so I ground out the inner plate and replaced the small 1/2" square tube outlet with a 3/4" round tube. Sounds like its breathing much better and surprisingly not that much louder. Probably cant try it in the wood till the weekend.

Yeah but that inner baffle plate being opened should make a bigger difference.

Sure are moving along with that lathe, getting the bugs worked out. Can't wait to see how that muffler will work out.

I think you're going to need to cut out some better spikes next.

Ok Chris, since you asked for it, I did it, just for you. (you believe that?)

Got a little time today and cut out a set of spikes for it from the pattern we scanned from your 920. They turned out pretty good and I left them raw for now, might paint them later.

Took it out and made about a dozen cuts in the bigger log with it to get it all tuned in and these bigger double dogs sure do make it easier to line up a bucking cut now.

The new bar studs worked out very well, and making the front one just a hair longer worked real well with the new spike being fastened under that stud.

Messed with the tune some and had it plenty rich to begin with but it pulled pretty well. I checked it with the tach and it was turning about 11450. I leaned it out by ear to where it sounded good and the results were it pulled even harder in the wood. It seems to be 4 stroking just a touch and when I put the tach on it again, it was turning 12200. When I was done I shut the saw off at the end of a cut and pulled the plug, and it seems my ear is still right on, by the looks of the plug.

To be honest when this one was put together, I wasnt that impressed with it. Yeah it was good and all just not overwhelming, but I have to say that the muffler mod woke it the hell up and its pulling real well now. Good enough I dont have any plans on getting rid of it anytime soon.

My 930 ain't running skeered yet but you're sneaking up on it with that 920.

Might have to modify my 920 muffler after seeing your results.

There isnt many around that would scare that 930 period...

That plug looks spot on to me as well .Nice job on the Muffler as well I like the pipe is it brazed on ?.I have a question about a Jonsered muffler maybe you or someone will know the answer.
I had my sons 2040 turbo here last week and I wanted to do the same to his muffler but I could not get it off the saw? I took out the two obvious bolts but it still wouldnt come off.There seems to be another holding it on some place like (inside ? ) but I cannot see any more.I did pry his slot open a little more and wow what a diffrence. Can someone explain how to get a 2040 muffler off for me Just too damn stupid I guess. Very nice Job Mark.

Nice close up! I think I'll have to break out the real digital camera I want to document a project! My cel does fine with the distance shots.....up close not so hot. The problem is...mine is a dinosaur (4 AAAs!) and it eats batteries!

after reading this thread i decided to pull a 920 down off the shelf and check it out.
found the p&c are toasted.
