been collecting pieces for new guide rails for a while now.long pieces are from outside bleachers,so is the angle stock.wood is 2x4 spruce.

these are the end pieces to attach the rails to the logs, two sizes 5" and 10" ,10" pieces allow my to put both channels side by side.

here are the 5" as they look like from underneath the rail. they slide in the channel to fit any size long up to 8'

because the rail is less than 6" i made a sled for the mill.

heres the setup mocked up on an 8' log

I really like the concept but am a little worried about the execution.

It may be just the angle of the photo but in the mock up photo it looks like front mill rail is not riding on the plywood.
IE more like this

If that is the case then the bar will not be coplanar with the log rail and it won't cut well or at all.

It may be just the angle of the photo but in the mock up photo it looks like back mill rail (B) is not riding on the plywood.

good catch, i was waiting for you to take a peak!but actually its not visible but the rail is all on but about 1/4. i had another piece for that but decided not to put it on for now.it was somewhat of a holder for my wedges, but i didnt like the way it sat/felt.

I'd be a bit worried only having a 1/4" purchase but it should be easy to fix.

One BIG advantage of a sled is that it should help produce a better finish on that first cut. This is because it will stop the operator sideways see-sawing the mill down the log. When operators do this the bar twists and rocks in the kerf and the chain bites in a slightly different depth.

Producing a good finish on the first cut could improve the finish of subsequent cuts for people who do not use their log rails on every cut

A minor disadvantage is cutting around branch unions and lumps and bumps won't be quite so easy.

Anyway good lateral thinking.

Cheers
