Hello,
I'm interested in milling and looking for a Stihl to start tinkering... I've come acros a 07S for a good price and wondering how long a bar it would run and if it's a good option for a milling saw?
I don't plan anything big but can get some 18 - 20" red oak for learning.

Thank you all.

Stihl collectors will hate me for saying this, but the 07S is an antique. Hang it on the wall.

For milling, you want a 90cc+ saw. You want parts to be readily available.

Thank you for the replys... just to clarify, it's a 07 with an S below the model number. It has a non original bar but no chain. I'll see if we can make a deal for it. Have to wait till payday (next week) so hope I don't miss it.

Thanks,
Manuel

Then I would read "Post #3 again" I would agree with not the right saw.

MTNGUNN post is correct.............I thought you where talking 070

OK, got it... 90cc min. Thank you.

The 90cc rule is if you plan to really try to mill some pretty decent sized logs. There's no sense in waisting a ton of money on smaller size saws that you are going to have to replace anyway. But, if you just want to doodle around to see if you like milling you can tinker with smaller saws. One of the mini mills that rides on a 2X4 guide can be picked up for $25 or so, and clamps to the bar. I actually clamped one on my little 14" Echo 305 and made a pick nick bench for the Boy Scouts. It was fun and got the boy's interested. It got my interest going. It was fun, that's all. I only did it because that was the only saw on my truck. It was under powered for the job.

I agree with the others that your 07 is not practical for any milling. If you have to buy it, definately no. You can pick up garage sale saws with 20" bars cheap enough to use on a mini mill. That way you won't be totally discouraged from playing with a mill. If you have never used a big saw you don't want to be scared of it either. Handling a 90 to 100cc saw with an Alaskan style mill can be a lilttle intimadating the first time.

Check out the first sticky in this forum, I think there are pics of smaller saws on mini mills, versus the big saws on Alaskans, Joe.

A 60CC saw is about the minimum with a 24" bar.
I ran my JD CS62 with a 28" bar on an Alaskan III.and on hardwood over 18" it really bogged down. The difference between that and my 660 (which I bought after seeing the JD bog) was remarkable.

It makes a big difference with the hardness of the wood also.

and welcome aboard.
