Hey I'm looking a new job however they want me to have a degree in Forestry or at least be working on that goal.

Can anyone recommend a good online school I could get a BS in Forestry?

Mark

OSU has a great forestry dept. Lousy football team(GO DUCKS), but good forestry dept.

Even if you could find an online coarse I sure wouldn't want to test the book learning on real nuts and bolts work, without a few calouses earned along with the degree.

I know a few that have gone through that program. In the end they said they were well prepared afterward, compared to other schools of the same background. What ever those other schools maybe I don't know. Just like anything else though, books will only get you so far. The real learning is hands on after you get your degree. That paper says you are only qualified to get the job. OJT will keep you the job if you soak it in and apply it when ever possible.

good and online and forestry? Doubt it. But, Mich State or Mich Tech or someone up there has a good reputation, you could probably do a fair bit of early course work at a local community college and transfer for years 3and4 to finish the BS. I don't know how much it staadns for, maybe you should ask a forest service person or something, but in the past at least, lots of forestry technicians just had associates degrees which takes only 2 years.

I have a 2 year degree. It got my foot in the door. But that's about it. I'm happy. I get TO GO OUTSIDE INTO THE WOODS while the people who have 4 year degrees do their work behind a computer. Well, there's one guy who makes the effort to go to the woods and does so I take that back.

I looked for online/mail courses at one time. Couldn't find any Forestry programs on line. Besides, it seems like it might be a good thing to have the labs in the woods, don't you? Also to learn what it is like to be in the woods because I have seen a lot of people come to work thinking it was like working in a mowed, landscaped park. That is not the case.

I went through a quickie Forest Engineering program at OSU (Orygun) and it is a world wide respected school.

I'm seeing some ads that mention "or a two year degree" now. I never saw that back when I started.

How old are you? Right now all the baby boomer foresters are retiring and I'm predicting a shortage, both in the government and private industry. It doesn't pay a lot of money, but is interesting work, usually.

Hey! SlowP, don't be refering to OSU as 'Orygun', that term applies to the real college, (U. of O.)

I will concede that OSU has the best forestry school, probably in the world.

Michigan Tech has a great forestry program. Work your butt off and put you through the paces but it prepares you for the real worlds. We have something like a 95% job placement rate. We have grads all over the world working, its an internationally known program.
