Hello to all, I finally decided to join forum after ‘lurking’ for a while reading posts and getting to know how this works and if there was anything to learn and maybe contribute.
Background – I have been involved in tree business since the 70’s when I was about 12 years old. My father had small company in NYC that started with loading brush into old Volkswagen bus and grew to 55’ bucket, two GMC 3500 dumps with 12 foot chip boxes, whisper / whipper chipper, couple of stump grinders, and to many chain saws to count. Worked weekends, summers for dad until after high school then I worked for about 13 years with NYC Parks & Rec tree division(to get health benefits) Dad had none, and continued doing tree work both for dad, myself, and as ‘hired gun’ for local companies when needed. Started to get burnout from business, sold my end of it and moved to VA about 7 years ago to start something new. Went into retail for 4 years then realized I needed to be outside in a tree again. Joined Richmond Parks & Rec a few years ago as tree climber again for health benefits and job security. Became ISA certified last year to see what it was all about after being in business so long and have not been impressed so far but that’s another story. Last year started my own stump grinding business, bought machine to do part time work, which does okay especially after Isabel. Still do climbing as ‘hired gun’ or do my own work, mostly cut & leave do not want to get involved with equipment and hired help problems again. Consider myself to be old-school climber with taut-line and rope snap. Started out that way and hard to get into all the new-age gear out there. Bought some of the new ‘biners’ and not quiet comfortable to bring them out on job yet, maybe someday. Took me 15 years to buy new spikes T-2 Bucks with velcro so I am in no rush. Hope to contribute and maybe learn something here from others in field who have ‘been there done that’.

Old school, eh?

Where did you live when you were up here?

I lived in the city, Queens near Kennedy airport to be exact and worked in Queens, Brooklyn, and Long Island.

The vast majority of climbers out there have never seen or heard of a VT or Distel hitch.

Do you know of PPM? I went up and worked with Todd last September.

I have seen demo of new hitch and played around with it on the ground just not ready to try it in the air.

I do not know PPM about 100 miles of interstate between Northern Va and me. I am in central VA. If you came in september must have been to enjoy the new hurricane altered landscape.

I know Norm and have done some work for him. He is one who told me about site. I guess he gets a free cup of coffee now right?;)

I didn't think that there were tree companies that were actually based down in the city. You learn something new every day I guess?

There are still a few companies in the city. I have been gone about 7 years now. Not a lot of bucket or crane work there all climbing and grunt work dragging it out. Did a lot of thru the house specials in brooklyn, no driveways or walkways to yard. Cut it all up trashcan size and go thru the living room out the front door. Those were the days ;) That might be fun thread Worst Job Ever?

For REAL??

I've taken several trees down that had the house built around it. In Ft. Polk here, one of those houses was 3 or 4 feet off the ground. We sliced/diced the pine and rolled it under the house to get it out.
Another was a nursing home. We had to pack everything through the dayroom, and down a hallway to get it out. About a 200' drag.

Dadatwins, that thread idea was a good one! Do it, before I do!:)

Lot of apartments and attached homes in the city. no access except through basement or main hall. Remember getting calls for jobs and removing 60' atlanthus trees thru the house. Best job was climbing or ropeman in yard. Hire 3 or 4 guys off street to pull brush and wood thru basement after it was cut up small of course. Guy at the chipper had it the worst had to chip up 60' of brush 3' at a time. No-one wanted these jobs and as long as people wanted to pay us for it, go for it.

I've done some pretty nasty backyard removals, where you had to lug up a hill, then up the stairs, then thru the (too narrow, off course) gate, then out to the street to chip... oh, and did I mention it was a Honey-Locust?

But THRU a house? Dang.. ya got me beat!

:D
