I have a DHT 27 Ton splitter. I'm splitting some big Osage and Honey Locust rounds, 12 to 18 inches. The splitter comes to a stop sometimes as it contacts the wood, then powers on through. My question is, is it normal for the splitter to stop or am I overworking it? Thanks

Thank you Frogfarmer. I run it at full throttle. When I say it stops, I'm talking about less than a second. Sometimes it doesn't actually stop but just crawls for a few seconds.

Those are very hard varieties, it's gonna struggle a little. It might not even be able to split some pieces. Sounds normal to me.

Yeah, my parents have a wood burning stove so Osage is ideal for burning but hard on equipment. I have a dozen or so honey locusts rounds roughly 30" thick, 24" tall. I'm going to have to stand my splitter vertical and see if I can split 2 or 3 inches at a time, working towards the center.

In time you'll get good at reading the grain. Look for pre cracks and avoid trying to split the knot end first. Good info so far and if it makes it through, it's all good!

Splitter is one I made to use a few years back. You can see the build in the link below.

Truck I finished a few years back too. LONG term build. It's a 1941 WC40 Dodge Military closed cab Weapons carrier. Pre cursor to the Power Wagons.

Beautiful truck. Love the Dodges myself, the older ones that is. I'm tempted to learn to weld so I can build a monster splitter.
