Blocks swing open so you can put the eye sling on the small sheave of the block. What are you using the carabiner for and what are you tying since the sling has eyes on each end?

What kind of weight will it be handling with what kind of application?

HSTO is a multiple wrap with a mechanical connector.

I have a buddy who does it with a hank of true blue and an old safety snap.

I thing the snap abrades the rope a bit too much though.

I like it for light rigging where we have to move the block around a lot. So I've been thingking of making my own.

Yes, I would use a locking brummel on each end, and might not match the buries depending on length. Just use a good taper.

I use a similar homemade item, but without the HSTO. Most times I simply drape the sling over a fork and run my lowering line through the carabiner on one end and the pulley on the other end. Make sure the carabiner is on the loaded side, so the rope won't get bound against the pulley sheave when loaded. This setup can be removed from the ground similar to a friction saver.

Most of the time I use a screwlink instead of a pulley. Great for roping brush and easy to remove without climbing back over to it.

I've also used old safety snaps for hanging 1/2" rope. They are a lot smoother than using a natural crotch and readily available if you dig around in the bottom of the toolbox long enough! :p Actually, I think they work as well as about anything else you could use besides a pulley. Nice and thick for better heat dissipation and usually worn smooth from their previous life clipped to the saddle D-rings. I don't use them much because of the weight, been using carabiners and 1/2" screw links.
