New to me 026 Pro

Good evening everybody!

I've been creeping around this site for a while but this is my first post! I recently purchased a used Stihl 026 Pro. I didn't really need it, but I've been wanting a chainsaw for a while. I had a branch come down in my yard from a storm so that's how I justified the purchase. It's in decent condition, the guy was asking $250 and I haggled him down to $161. It came with a 16" bar (I think it is a no-name Chinese bar) and two chains. I was just wondering if you guys think I got a good deal? I can post some pictures of it if you guys would like me to.

I'm located in the North West and the 026 is going for around $250-300 in good condition with a good bar and chain. That is an average of garbage and dreamers

Thanks for the replies guys! It is in decent condition, not great. It was VERY dirty when I got it, I've spent quite a bit of time cleaning it up. I've put a new air filter, fuel filter, and starter rope on it. I bought a Husqvarna Powerbox case for it to live in (which is an absolutely amazing case). I also ported the muffler. But I need to get a new carb for it because the one on it doesn't have a high speed adjustment. Another plus is everything except for the bar and chains seem to be OEM from what I've seen.

From what I understand I can buy a Walbro WT-194 and put the metering snorkel from my stock carb on it? Or should I just buy a Walbro WT-426 with the snorkel already on it? The 426's seem to be demanding twice as much as the 194's on Ebay for a genuine piece. However I have also read that the 194's allow 100% adjustment while the 426's only allow 25%?

I will post a few pictures of this new piece tomorrow morning for you guys!

I found one in the hard rubbish a few years ago. It needed a good clean as it was chockers with sawdust. The chain was crap as it looked like it had been cutting rocks. But it is a great saw, and cuts well.

You got a good deal. Especially if it’s a real PRO, and not just a replaced cover.

If you look around your clutch at 2-3 O’Clock, do u see a metal or plastic oil pump?

Do u have an oil pump adjustment screw under the saw, or just a notch with nothing to turn?

Is there a decomp valve on the saw?

You’ve got the compensator carb.

If all above true, you’ve got a 44mm bore 026 pro. It’s an excellent saw.

A new 194 costs around $45 on eBay. Grab one and swap the compensator cover onto it. Alternatively, you can clean and rebuild your carb if it’s a dual adjustment one.

Take a look at your piston. Make sure it’s not scored.

$250 is a reasonable price for a running 026 and drf255 ^^^ gave you a good set of things to check out to see if it really is a PRO model. The 194 is a fine carb for this saw and as said above ,the snorkel cover can be swapped onto it direct fit.

To drf255; this guy has the decomp, adjustable oiler, and the metal oil pump. It seems to be a true 026 Pro. But it doesn't have a fully adjustable carb which is annoying. I'm going to pick up a 194 some time and slap it on this bad boy.

Very nice looking saw you have there, it is very difficult to find one in nice clean condition any more, only see mostly well used dirty saws come up but a couple weeks back one very clean looking one sold near me for $350. Sold quick I might say and I know where a NIB one resides.

Smokey7, Ray sent me the manuals, thank you for tagging him! As to the odd price of the saw, the man I bought it from advertised it on Facebook marketplace for $250. I met up with him to check it out and it was extremely dirty and didn't look like it had been maintained well. He did allow me to fire it up and make one cut with it, it seemed to run well but I was hesitant to get into it for too much. I offered him $140 he came back with $200, I offered $150 he came back with $170, I offered $160 he came back with $165. I jokingly offered $161 and he took it!

I just want to thank everybody that has responded to this thread, I'm very glad I joined this site! And a big shout out to Ray for for sending me the manuals!

You got a smoking good deal.

I’ve seen many later model pro saws with the fixed H jet. Believe it or not, the $15 194 Chinese knockoff works fairly well on that saw.

They respond well to porting, but can get pricey to do secondary to parts.

I’ve ported around 30 of them. The funny thing is that I have one ported 026 in my garage and it was ported by @pioneerguy600 . It’s going nowhere.

Here’s what a ported one can do. It’s not an everyday thing for sure, but an idea of the power they can make.
