Hello to all and thanks for having me on this neat site, this is my first post.
I have a line on a Stihl chainsaw model 041av it is about 20 years old or older and in real nice shape.
The man that own's it wants something smaller and lighter. He is asking 200.00 for it, and he says it has about 15 hours of work time on it. Is this model worth the money and can anyone tell me more about this model.
Thanks again-oldiron73.......

I second that response. Get a new one, take care of it and it will last the rest of your life...presuming you're not using it full time and don't eff up and crush it. :D good luck, welcome!

A good running 041AV in great running condition with low hours and looking good cosmetically will easily go for $200 on ebay. That is ebay though, where all Stihl saws go for a premium.

The 041AV was the best saw in the 60cc category of the time. Rock solid. Lasts a long time. Heavy for it's power compared to modern saws, but there are no plastic parts on it either. Most guys say the AV isn't up to par. They run at lower RPM than modern saws, but have torque a plenty!

However, most parts are no longer available from Stihl, and parts are getting hard to find.

If parts were not a problem, most fixes would be cheap and quick. Mostly gas lines, oiler parts, seals, etc.

If it is an "electronic" as in 041AVE, the electronic modules were a problem on this model. Especially the earliest ones.

Is it worth $200? I don't know, but I would look long and hard at it for $150.

Hope this helps,

Bob

if you want a vintage saw to look at and cut with a little just for the sake of running it, ok
if youre looking for a saw you intend to cut with a lot, idk...
200$ isnt bad for a stihl that size, 15hours? finding that hard to believe myself, thats less then a tank of gas a year
like bob said, 150$, i might buy it just to have it, but i wouldnt run it much, too heavy
200$ might be fair if its exactly what youre being told it is and you have seen it run and cut with it
but its a crap shoot if you ever need to fix it
