I have been searching and doing all the reading I can on choosing a saddle. I have narrowed it down to the New Tribe ProGear or th Butterfly ll. This will be my first time climbing trees if that matters when choosing a saddle. Any thought would be great.

Well it really depends on the individual climber.

When I started learning I was at a large company and had a few different brands of saddles and spikes to practice with. When I purchased my first saddle the store also had a rope running through a friction saver up on a roof beam so you could try it on and tie in and hang for a litlle bit.

I prefer a but strap when I'm going to be hanging for a while, and leg straps when spikeless with more limb walking then hanging, and when spiking removals where there is no hanging free.

Climbing saddles are like a pair of new climbing boots, you have to workem in a little while before you really know if you like it or not. I have a glide and a buckingham basic with 4 dee rings. When I purchased the glide I did not like it for the first month. The glide also is like a sliding dee, which I don't prefere, so that had a little to do with it. I also shortened the bridge on the glide so it didn't slide as much, Now I pretty much let my daughters climb with my basic and 99% use the glide, but keep the basic with me for back up when working.

I've been climbing in a Butterfly for three years, I really like it, it's comfortable, a wide back strap, plenty of gear loops...
I am a definite proponent of the sliding bridge, having tried the fixed attachment harnesses, it allows you so much more manouverability, the Butterfly II has a shorter bridge than the original Butterfly (which mine is) and is replaceable, these were the two main complaints with the original.
If you can get a chance somewhere to hang in one, it does help, see where it 'pinches', can you adjust it to be comfortable?
Good luck!

2 cents...

Over a couple of decades in and out of harness' from Australian brand "Vertical" tree surgeons harness and a couple of Buckingham's, most recent being "Aussie Traverse" sliding small "D's" and a large assortment of rock, mountaineering and sailing harness' all I could say is hang in 'em for a while and make sure the pants you wear under it are very comfortable and have no belt in them and preferably no belt loops...

I don't know a harness that won't/does'nt pinch at some time but the Bucky are very good for my larger rear end and long hours i spend in tree's...:D

the butterfly 2 is a great saddle many new climbers feel insecure in this saddle because of the very thin bridge i dont recomend this saddle for new climbers for that reason i do recomend the buckingham versatile for new climers ps the b2 is for positiong only (WLL) is 220lbs not for fall protection. remember always take your time trust your gear inspect all equipment and clime safe.

I would give the nod to the BFII. I have had it for almost a year now and really like. Super comfy and light. The only complaint I have with it is that the adjustment starps that are made out of the bungee materail in the back fthe saddle never stay adjusted. Sometime when I make the mistake of puting it on without looking they will actually be comletely out of the buckles.
PITA!!!

Also check out some of the euro saddles that arent sold in this country.

I bit the bullet last week and purchased the New Tribe Progear. Should be here Wednesday or Thursday. From reading and asking, I am just too big for the Butterfly saddle. I am looking forward to the New Tribe.

Came home to a New Tribe ProGear today. Dark by the time I got home so, I " hung around in the basement". I sat in it for a good 20 minutes and it is quite comfortable. I can't wait to try it out this weekend and see how it works in the trees for a few hours.
