Got my next log to mill today. 27" 10'8" beech log. Any opinions, comments, etc on Beech? Also what size stock would you recommend milling into if I plan to try to sell this when done? 4/4, 5/4?

5/4 would be my choice if I was going to try to sell later.

I've got a few beeches on the woodlot here that are also candidates for milling. The one I have my eye on here has a badly damaged top, it was hit by a big oak that came down on it. Close by there are a couple of other beeches that are competing for space, so if I remove the damaged tree, the others will fill in the space. I'm somewhat wary of felling this beech, the stuff at the very top of the tree may be weakened and rotten. But I should get a very nice trunk section for milling. I've never done any furniture projects with beech, but I assume it's very similar to maple? hack beech 002 e.jpg

Well calling for more rain and figured I better get the log across the yard while I can...as good as it is going to get for awhile. Got it where I wanted and started trying to get the end up per Bob's suggestion. Think I've done pretty good. Also blocked up the trailer so no chance of it tipping with me. Set the rails up, mount the mill on the 394, and get to it!

Thanks. This new power head takes no prisoners!

I'm glad you like it. I hope this 084 or 088 will impress me since I let that one go. That was easily the strongest stock 90cc saw I've ever owned.

Glad the saw is working out for ya! Looks like you're getting some nice slabs. I did some milling with the 394 yesterday as well :)

I got the log elevated on a slope and the board to start it on it today. I figured it was 5 this evening when it was done so I didn't fire up a saw on it yet. That will be in the morning sometime.

I got a little done today on the poplar. I was going to use the 088 but the oiler quit oiling the bar and leaking around the oiler. The 084 was way too heavy with the 41" being the only bar that would reach through it all the way. The little 21" wouldn't. I may square it up now after I got the 2 live edge slabs off with the 046. Mike notice I knocked one side off that log. With a 32" bar and the spikes knocked off..I get 25" cut. Little mini mill action made it where I can slab it all apart.

Ground some chain tonight....sleet and freezing rain so not much else I could do.

I got 4 boards out of what was left. I used the mini mill and squared the sides off and used the 24" bar with semi skip square filed chain and it was smoother than the semi chisel chain at 15° top plate.
