I took a lead off of a silver tonight. The HO said he saw a bird go out of a nest in the tree. It looked like a squirrel's nest. He asked if I could clean it out. I said was it a red tail? He said no. OK, went up and got busy. Well, as took out the lead over a spruce I saw it!!!! A red tailed hawk, and it's pi$$ed. I look over to my left into the nest @ 10 feet away, 5-6 eggs in it. Whoops, HEADACHE, I got some soft serve rolling down my leg. 1 eye on the bird and 1 on the saw.
Finished up real quick and out of the tree with out any contact.:givebeer:
Has any one ever been dive bombed by a bird?

In days gone past and in places distant from here, I banded raptors for work. The Cooper's Hawk was the most aggressive near the nest, and I have been struck by them in their defense of the nest. Golden Eagles were the least aggressive of the species I worked with. Peregrine Falcons went crazy when I entered their eyries. And while I have been close to Red Tailed Hawks while banding, I find them to generally be mild in their behavior.

Yeah, taking some picture on a little island that stood 30' high and about 60' off the beach near Kalaloch, WA. I get to the top of the rock and this seagull starts divebombing me. I'm running back and forth waving my tripod over my head. My "friends" were rolling in the sand laughing. It's funny now :)

did you knock the nest down?

NO. I really like the red tails. I always comment on how many there are today. When I was a kid you might only see 1 or 2 a year. It just set me back when I saw the eggs and realized I might be in trouble.

PS once I was hunting (sleeping in the woods) and an owl almost landed on me, that was way worse than yesterday.

We have been going to Hawk Mountian way before cabela;s was up there. Ever since I was a kid. Didn't see to many back then, watch out these days huh?

magpies

i get bombed here in nz quite often by magpies, they have no issues in hitting you in the back of the head, i since learned to wear glasses on the back of my head so they think there eyes then they wont get so close.

been bombed once by a harrier hawk (once again another bloody aussie import) and that was no where near as bad as magpies.

Yeah bloody magpies. they go nuts at you, can hit you pretty hard when they get really ticked.
I hate magpies, they are just rats with wings. used to spend alot of time and energy hunting them, would love to have a nice little sawn off 12 to suprise the little buggers.

next weekend the magpies will be gettin a wake up, after i been shooting duck on opening morn on the walk back to the car its time for the magpies to get a hiding

at high school we used to hit them with cricket and base ball bats down the back of the feild takes 4 hits with a bat to ground the basturds. sounds ruthless but it was better then how the grounds keepers controlled them

I've had flying squirrels dart between my legs, and a possum piss on me once while working in Melbourne, Australia, but I've never been severely divebombed or attacked by birds while working in a tree. Red squirrels get pretty excitable if you're in the same tree as them. I knocked a gray squirrel nest out of a beech tree and wound up raising a couple of them. This little booger hid out under my shirt and ate chocolate covered almonds from my mouth...
