Forgive me, but I'm searching for some Yellow Cedar, preferably the stuff that is burl. Would also consider crotch or knotty stuff....must be big enough to get some pen blanks for my personal stash(maybe around 11 x 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 inch size {LxWxH} which would fit into a MFRB-USPS)?

I have been doing search after search all over the internet, but I'm coming up blank! The actual name is "Cupressus nootkatensis"(in case there is another yellow cedar). The range can be seen in this link: Cupressus nootkatensis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here's is a photo of a pen I made using this timber:(it'll give you an idea what I'm looking for)

If anyone that is milling along the northwestern part of the US, or even on the western edges on Canada and has any of this stuff(dried or green) and would like to make a deal/trade or whatever. Let me know!

The variety of that species that grow in oregon is called port orford cedar, same family as Alaskan yellow, just a little different sub species.

Sure and the variety of that species that grows in California is redwood.... just a different sub species. the reality is that there are a lot of trees are in a genus that doesn't make them the same. Port oreford cedar and alaskan yellow cedar are very different woods. In my mind port oreford is the better of the two and has the nicest scent of any wood.

For the op many conifers have interesting little pockets of grain similar to that pen. but most won't have a chunk the size your looking for, including Alaskan cedar.

It was worth a try....and it is amazing that burls on the west coast don't get large enough to fit a medium flat rate?

After all, I've seen oak burls within 50miles of me that look to be the size of a full size pick-up truck front end! And some from the Aussie world are weighed by the ton!

Scott (maybe someone from British Columbia might have some) B

If your still interested in some yellow cedar, I might be able to help you out. I don't have any burl, but the logs I've been milling have some large knots, and I could get some interesting grain.
Pieces wouldn't be as you specified, they would come from slabs, but I could make it up in volume.
