Any idea why leaves would become spotty and fall off throughout summer on a Norway maple? The tree appears to be in decent shape. I'll be going in it to inspect the decay in a few lost limbs but I believe the main trunk to be sound. Thanks!

Any way to prevent it?

I don't think the tar spot (rhytisma) is necessarily detrimental.. but I do believe it's passed from tree to tree. Norway's are garbage. Cut it down and plant an English oak. :)

Edit: I think I heard someone say removing all the leaves after drop will help, but I'm not sure. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm mistaken.

Could also be powdery mildew. Depending on your definition of spots. Powdery mildew is a gray colouring on the leaf. Affected by weather conditions, it doesn't hurt the tree (other than aesthetics) and no practical treatment.

Could also be anthracnose. It COULD be a multitude of things. Picture would help lower that number greatly.

They are dark, dry spots. Similar in texture to how the entire leaf is in the fall.

"Similar to how the entire leaf is in the fall" sounds more like Anthracnose...but maybe we have different pictures in our minds what that means. It is dangerous to assume we think the same thing. Can you post a pic or 5?

I can. I'll try and swing by tomorrow. I'll google now and see if I can find it.

I'm thinking its like this. Some of the images I googled had raised black spots, a growth maybe. This was more a burn or dead spot.

That looks like anthracnose to me. It won't necessarily kill the tree. To spite the sketchy sounding name. I believe treatment is the same as I stated above. Remove fallen infected leaves. Maybe prune away newer shoots that are infected?
Anyways, it should be fine. Try the leaf treatment if nothing else, deal with any stress issues as best you can.
