O/T What is this thing?

A buddy of mine stopped by today with this, he got from an old house he cleaned out and he's trying to find out what it is. It's 36" long, made of wood with one end being made of brass. It's abviously some type of measuring device, made by Lufkin. Any ideas?

Some kind of scaling stick aka "gyp stick", I think.

I've seen pictures of lumber graders using those .

Yep, Board Feet. I would have guessed scaling stick also, I wouldn't have been able to say for logs or sawn timber though.
