I have an O64 with a bad coil. I have seen many coils listed on Ebay that say they will fit multiple Stihl saws, including the 064. A local saw mechanic told me that using any coil other than the exact one that came in the saw would potentially ruin the saw. Is this correct?

I have seen some used coils listed as being straight out of an 064, but the picture of it looks slightly different than the one I have. Should I bite the bullet and buy a new one, or will one of the used ones that may not be the exact one I have work fine?

Does the flywheel on your 064 have 2 keyways cut in it or one. Some had 2 keyways and you could switch positions depending on the coil used. My 064 had the rev-limited coil so I moved to the other slot in flywheel and ran a coil from my 026 instead.

sticknstring, read your 064 coil post, from back in 2005. Is this
the third time you have had coil problems with this saw?

Trigger,

Thanks for the heads up. I had forgotten that I had even posted about this saw before. This is still the same problem I had back then. I never fixed the saw, I just replaced it with a new 660. The 064 has just been sitting around collecting dust. But now I have been thinking about getting it running again to do a little milling with.

I will have to see if it has two keyways or not. If so I do have a spare 026 coil that I could use if it will work. I may need a little guidance to figure out which keyway it needs to be in if it does have two.

Thanks for all the help.

If I could help I would..........Lakeside53 will be your best bet for
help on the 064, plus a few others here.........you mite do a search
here for 064 and see what comes up.

In what part of MO. are you North, South, East, or West?

If you have the two slot flywheel, you can use the 0000 400 1300 (the most common) coil. if you don't, then you do need the exact coil. Post your flywheel info...

Also, try search... I've posted the 064 and 066 flywheel and coil info several times in the past.

Alright, Got some more info. The flywheel does have two keyways, the # on it is 1122 4000 1203.

I have a coil off of an 026 that I would like to use if it will work. I can't find any numbers on it though. I'll post some pics and maybe you can tell me if it is one that will work. If by chance it will work, can I put a longer plug wire on it? I'm not sure if it can be replaced or not. Thanks again for your help.

Trigger, I'm up in the KC area.

The 026 coil will work fine. The HT lead just unscrews. Use the lead of your old coil if you have to.

Use the X (or B on some flywheel) slot. Get it in the wrong slot and it will kick like a mule.
