See how adept I am at staying on topic?
Anyway, my JD 540A is in bad need of a brake band for the winch, it slips and wont hold the hitch. Trouble is JD recently restocked all parts for this machine as antique and trippled the price.
Being the tight waud that I am, I cant come to parting with 450 U.S. for a glorified brake shoe. Part # AT21240.
Dozer Dan kindly tried to help me find one, but couldnt find one other than JD in stock.
Does anyone know of a company who made this part?
I appreciate your help.
Thanks,
John

Try getting a quote to reline the shoe from a vendor who specializes in the relining of overhead traveling crane clapper brakes?

Can you find and old one locally.Maybe you could send an old one out and have it relined. That way you could just change them around when you got it back. Then have your old one relined for a spare.

Thank's DD & BG, I have an old one around here somewhere, I will get it relined, good idea, glad I thought of it.
I better stop pissin' and moaning, bite the bullet, buy the absorbadent thing, get back to work, and make it back in production. Glad I can do my own R&R on my beloved 540A.

John,
When you get the relined brake back, send out the other one to get done before the relining price triples... Rick/Creep

Thanks for all the input.
Hey creep, I fixed it, I took my sledge and drove in 5 dewalt palm sanders between the drum and brake band.
John

John,
Good idea....Why didn't I think of that? But then why would I? Also, quick acting on your part...I heard palm sanders are going to triple in price here shortly. And why wouldn't they?...Rick/Creep

Hey Creep, how's Chainsaw Express Ltd. doing? Does it go bye Niagra Falls? Need them to run a 999PP to me then another couple of saws back to Keystone Weird. What truck stops do they frequent that are close to N.Y where I can intercept a saw?
John

John,
The saw is ready, but I have to give it the Creep test yet on Monday. One of us will get it up to the Falls for you. And why wouldn't we? Just bring a long strong rope & I'll send er over falls in waterproof barrel packed full of shipping peanuts with all you saws duct taped together. Hope I don't slip. Rick/Creep

That will work, thanks Rick, will call to make the arrangements. PM me your cell. The spring pole express may work fast as well.
I got the winch fixed I simply discarded a lock nut on the brake cylinder which gave me more adjustment travel to tighten the brake band. Now were logging!
John
