Does the Poulan 3400 saw have an oil flow adjustment screw? I bought this saw new in 1981 and after seeing what comparable saws cost I decided to see if I could fix it. The saw would loose power, rpms would drop significantly as soon as the saw got hot, then it would stop. I put in two new piston rings and that cured the first problem which was pretty significant. I was surprised that it cured the problem since the new rings were only .005 to 006. thicker than the old.

The other problem is the oil flow. It runs down the side of the saw. Can I cure that situation?

The 3400 also seems to use maybe 3 or 4 times as much fuel as my Stihl 025, I suppose that’s normal for an older saw. Also I rebuilt the carburetor so fuel consumption should not be related to a carb problem.

Hi Ron,
Early 3400 models had an adjustment screw for the oiler.Screw is accessible on the underside of the saw. It should be set 2 turns open from a seated position. Remove bar and make sure the oil slot and hole on the saw is clean. Clean any crud/sawdust buildup from bar guide rail groove. Along with clearing the crud from the bar oil hole.
