I threw a new gallon of saw bar oil in my box on top of my rigging rope. As my luck usually goes the top came off and soaked my new 3/4" 200' long samson rigging line. what is the best way to clean this off?? pressure washer w/degreaser?? sink soap??

Throw it out. Oil/Gas/ basically any petroleum product degrades the individual fibers of a rope. I wouldnt trust this to tie down a load of pine needles!

Sorry about your bad luck. This is one mistkae I hope you wont repeat!

chemical resitant

that rope is just like our climbing line and oil gets on it all the time. thats what makes synthetic sooo great! keep the batteries away from them

id throw that rope away or you might be able to use it to pull trucks out etc. wouldn't use it for tree work . a $ 300 dollars rope aint worth a insurance claim or risking someone's life if it breaks when lowering limbs etc

um....oil does not affect nylon or polyester ropes. Just wash it with a rope washer (CMI or similar) , LIFELINE cleaner and cold water, rinse three times with cold.

QOUTE:

Testing done by the AlliedSignal Corporation indicates salt water, acetone, benzene, chloroform, freon, gasoline, kerosene, motor oil, mineral oil, paints and pine oil do not appreciably affect nylon/polyester and do not damage your rope.

Laboratory tests performed have shown no appreciable damage done to nylon fibers by contact with insect repellents containing DEET (Test #0559).

UNqoute.

unless you have an extra hour of your life you dont need, DO NOT throw it in the washing machine. you will be untangleing it from itself and the washer!
for washing machines use a mesh rope bag.
wash it and be done with it.
remember, ropes go in the highest box, liquids run towards the ground, so saws and chemicals go in the bottom box, no matter how tired you are at the end of the day. I too, am guilty of telling the crew to just throw all on the truck and lets go home.

The suggestion to contact the rope vendor is good. I recall someone from
Beal ropes acknowledging the general conclusion quoted above, but still
expressing concern about additives that might be in the gas/oil.
So, ... . (Actually, of the above, the most innocuous seeming--viz., water--
DOES affect nylon with substantial reduction (10-18?%) in strength.)

cut it in half and use it for dragging stuff on the ground with trucks, i would throw it out first before trying to aerial rig with it
