OK, here's a question:

How in the HELL is the oil pickup tube plumbed into the integral oil tank? I have a brand new 351-VL crankcase and can't seem to see where it, goes or what crazy tools would be needed to put it in there. Wow.

Also, should I replace my oil like with say Viton or PTFE so it never rots? I've seen one rotted to hell when it was 15 years old. Thanks guys!

Oil LIne

For starters You can go eo Echo's websit and I believe under tech support type in CS-351VL and it will show IPL. If it is anything like a 302 Echo there is a brass nipple On the side of the tank at an angle up that With a pair of offset needle nose pliers You can fit a factory molded line. You might need a little pen light to see it and fit it in. Good Luck

Remember me saying have fun with that oil pipe? I was dead serious.

It's nipple is up farther in then the 302 and I think you may have to split the cases to install it. Maybe not if your good with magic.

Thanks. How on earth do I split the case, and also how would I ever find a factory replacement pick-up tube and filter?

im still looking for that parts

Thanks!

I looked in my oil tank, there was no pickup filter/weight. The remnants of the suction tube were stuck and I do mean stuck to the tank walls. I had a little dental mirror and flashlight but could not find the nipple. I filled the tank with fresh kerosene hoping that it will soften up the black tube crap and also break down the age-old oil that smells like crap. Hope this at least gets me going in the right direction.

Howdy,
It's tougher than the 302 replacement. In either case, take a piece of .130 or .105, (don't remember which right now, it has to fit the ID of the nipple as close as possible) string trimmer line about a foot long. Insert it into the hole of the nipple. Slide the oil line over trimmer line. Get a good push on the trimmer line to keep it stiff, and then push on the oil line. Should slide over the nipple. Pull the trimmer line out. If it's really cold, hang just nipple end of the oil line in hot water for a moment.
Regards
Gregg

Man I owe you not a case of beer but a whole pallet! You got a forklift at your house?

I agree with ModifiedMark. Have an old 351 that had no oil line. Had to split case to get at it. Decided to get an excellent running 351 from Modifiedmark and use the old one as a parts saw.

How exactly did you split that case, and where did you get a good oil tube and pickup? Thanks.

Also, do you know where I can get a head gasket?

Never got an oil line, etc. There are screws behind black plugs that you remove. They may be hex screws (it was a while ago) but you remove them and it comes apart fairly easily. Likely have to make a cylinder gasket from a paper bag. There is a thread that shows how.

A paper supermarket bag? That will work???

OK found the thread, gotcha.

Is there a torque spec on the head bolts?

Well as soon as I got home from work I opened the case on my spare (never used) crankcase. Two bolts were all that was holding it together, located near the main bearing area. NOW I see where that oil pickup tube is. The heck with magic, I'm doing this the easy way!

Of course now I destroyed the paper-thin crankcase gasket, I guess I can just replace it with some sort of Permatex. What a little project this turned into!
