I just picked the nicest 028AV I've ever seen but it's not oiling. Is the pump behind the clutch drum like all other Stihls I've worked on? And, Is there a way to update the pump to a more modern clutch drum driven type? I'll clean all the lines and passages first. I'm looking foward to getting this saw running because it sounds MUCH snappier than the last couple of 028s I've had.
Thanks, John..

Yes, It's behind the clutch. It has a couple of gears, one of which may be binding on the crank, so just ream it out a tad. Don't worry about updating it (you can't anyhow), it works great and is the most reliable pump arrangement they make - and even the current 088 pump is just a big brother version...

I would have thought that changing the place where the oild pump was driven from would be a pretty fiddly mod. Kinda like turning a front wheel drive car into a rear wheel drive car.

Does oil at idle worry you that much?

I need to learn to hit "update" to see if someone more knowledgeable has already replied.... That'll teach me to walk away from a half typed message...:D

Cool. I'll open it up this weekend and see what I see.
Thanks, John.....
