Oil pump upside down?

I did a fairly long cut yesterday with an MS460 with the oil and gas caps facing vertically down. I can't see how the bar oil can get pumped in that orientation? I checked the bar and it felt kinda dry. Am I missing something here or what?

The oil pickup is on the end of a rubber hose and should flap around in the tank to pick up the oil...

Why did you have to hold it up side down?

Yeah for some reason (blindness? lol) I never saw it in the oil tank, after 2 years! Oh well. The one in the gas tank I see every time! Never mind then.
