Hey guys,

This is my first post here, although I have been reading on the sidelines for about a month, and I have learned a ton from you all.
I am an amature when it comes to chainsaws, but I have been cutting for firewood on a almost weekly basis for about a year and a half. The only saw that I have been using is a Stihl MS290 which a bought new 1.5 years ago. I also have picked up an old Husky L65, I know the saw runs and works well, but the oil tank leaks pretty bad. I plan to fix this but would like to know more about the L65. Can anyone tell me how many cc's, bhp, aproximate how old it may be and anything else about this saw. I don't have pics to post right now, but will try to get some. I got the saw from my dad who bought it used from a small engine repair shop up here about 6 years ago. Is this saw worth fixing, it is heavy compared to the 290, but darn near the whole saw is metal of some kind. Any info would be great.

Are you sure the oil tank leaks? Try loosening the oil tank lid briefly after cutting. Does this change the amount of oil that leaks?

I guess that I just assumed that it was leaking, after cutting it looses all the oil that is left, but I will give that a try. It may be a week or 2 before I can use it, i need to clean it up and get it running again after a couple of years of no use.

Well Thanks again, that will be my first check, I hope that is all it is, this is a fun saw, pretty good pulling power I would enjoy using it again.

RIX, just in case you are interested;

The original Husky 65 came out in 1968.

At some time, the production was moved from Sweden, to the TOMOS factory in Yogoslavia.

My saw says "Made in Sweden" on the ID tag, but do you think that it may have come from the factory in Yogoslavia. I really don't know what year mine is. It looks like they began in 74 with the L65 but mine does not have the safety break in front of the main forward handel.

Not if it says "made in Sweden" - then it is made in Sweden.:)

...but if it says just "Husqvarna - Sweden" it is another story.

The first 65 was introduced in Feb. 1966. 65A

65L was the last released in the fall -72.

1973-74 the tools were shipped to Tomos Juguslavia.
65 model saws made here will not say Husqvarna as far as I have been told.
The 65G and L has pressour casted cylinders at the time "New teknolegy".

Thanks Mange,
Man, I did not know that things had changed so many times with the Husky name and who made what and when. I guess I have a lot to learn, but thats why I'm here. Thanks again.

The 65 is somewhat of a special case. I can't remember any of the other Husky's that were produced in the Tomos factory. The main reason for this was in order to sell saws in some communist countries, they had to be manufactured in a communist country. (I know I am butchering the details, but hopefully you get the point) Stihl did the same thing with the 038Mag years later.

The 65 was a fairly bulletproof saw (think Homelite XL-12 or Mac 10-10) that did not have Anti-Vibe.

Thank you Magnus, I hoped you would step in here.....:biggrinbounce2:

Not too long ago I saw pictures of one of the TOMOS L65s at E-bay. There was a link to it in this tread, but the pictures are of course pulled by now.

On the number plate it said "Husqvarna, Sweden" and "TOMOS" as far as I remember.
I was rather surpriced, so I printed out the picture.

The frame is Magnesium. Thats a good old saw by the way.

I really like it, and can't wait to get it running again. I think there is lots of hours on this old girl, but she's still strong.

This is most likely due to that they were in the deal as parts made not assembled and HVa wanted the name on them as they were made here.
I think this was a good answer so I did not press him on details.
If it is tru I cant tell, but like to think so.

I found the picture (paper copy only).

My memory was slightly off, as the number plate didn't say "Sweden" on it.

What it said was:

Husqvarna - TOMOS
Type 65 L
Made in Yugoslavia

0650(printed)058901(stamped)
