well fellas.
had my first property damage yesterday. nothing of too much value lost other than that goose egg i was proud of.

last job of the day, a quick cherry in the back corner of the yard leaning towards the neighbors yard and all the work wouldve been over the fences seperating yards.

screw the climb i say to ben we'll use a crotch on this big ol oak (that was right over the top of this cherry) to tip tie it and i'll wedge her abit to slowfell her right into the yard all nice and pretty like.

i wanted to have a little fun with the ropes seeing how it had been a hot minute since i rigged last.

needless to say it all went well until the rope slid a little bit on a branch that i thought i didnt need to worry about. anyway on the way into the yard that
2 ft slip of the rope cost the top piping of a chain link fence.

Feck i yell.

then the ol bag home owner comes out yapping. that topped it off. as if i wasnt fired up enough i gotta hear it from this one.

anyway tomw i go over there again and measure out the piping i need.

ah balls.

cant win em all boys.

It happens bro....a wise man once told me that if your half as good as you think you are you will be ok....no ones perfect not even old dirty...

I can remember reading a book Tom D. loaned me "Building The Indian" About a tree guy who gets a wildf hair and sets out to rebuild and old motorcycle.

One chapter is about how he's doing a cottonwood removal where he thinks he can drop it beside the house. You guessed it.

I go man, I would never drop a tree on a house! Mmmmmm not too lonag after that....I was suprised that there was only around $8k in repair costs.

One of my first jobs was with Lawn Doctor. I tipped the combine off a bank once and it rolled over and rested against the customers above ground pool. I got credit for staying until the tow truck driver came and arranged to pull it out. The boss came and sent me home before the ordeal was over. Guess I became human at a younger age. :monkey: You'll get over it. :hmm3grin2orange:

dude

go big or go home. If you don't break some eggs you'll never make an omlette. I'm done with the cliche'. No biggie, be glad you learned on someone elses insurance!

$15 in up front material costs.

How much lost when the homeowner tells everyone how you messed up her fence, and didn't seem to care?

Fix it with a sincere smile, and she'll tell you everyone how great you were about taking care of it.

It's not never screwing up that wins, it's how you handle it when it happens.

This is true, its not their fault for your screw up suck it up apologize and make it right.
Had only one incident myself ,doing a simple removal about 5 - 6 yrs ago,40 ft silver maple, near a small steel shed.Everything going fine til cutting a small limb off the tip of the leader, probably at most 2 inches in diameter 10 ft long, had been tying everything off and lowering it,this I just held on to as I was going to hold it and throw it and as I did a gust of wind came up took it back and out of my hand it rode down through the tree and landed right on the peak of that crappy lil 8x8 tin shed.Homeowner was there we talked about it and I offered to get him a new shed and put it up brand new about $350.00 - $400.00.He said no he wanted my insurance info,oh crap but it's why I have it,so I contacted my agent gave him my info and he filed a claim,i talked to my agent after she said it was taken care of.
Fast forward 2 yrs same guy calls wants another removal,we go to do the job and i see he still has his 20 yr old crappy shed with a dented roof,I asked him what happened with the insurance? He says smiling "oh i ended up getting a nice little check from them" Seems his wife works for an insurance company and knew the ropes, and he got compensated for the price of a new shed, removing the old shed, and installing a new shed $1,500.00 in all!!!! and just pocketed the money and still uses the old one i hit.Wonder why insurance costs so much?

What a p.o.s., I nailed a little shed with a small chunk from about 50' up. You just look at those sheds and they are ruined. When I got down, I just opened the door and pounded it up with my hands, people weren't home, never heard about it.

Can't you report fraud like that? The fact that he gloated about it when the claim was against your insurance company would have set me off.

It may or may not be fraud, depending on how the contractual language of the claim payment was written. But I'd be calling my agent and asking him about it - if the guy is really such a tool...

No kidding, man that sux, I'd have told him ta take a flying leap then walked away. Don't think there's much you can do about the settlement 'cept maybe inform your ins. co., doubt anything would come of it though. Pretty well a pos person imho, especially after you offered to repair/replace the shed, what an azz.
Then again, you could drop a REALLY big one right on it (OOOPSY!! Aw gee, well its already been replaced man tuff luck mf'r):hmm3grin2orange:

I was clearing some pine trees around a lake house that belonged to a lawyer in Greenville..I have done tens of thousands of dollars worth of work for that family all together..These were decent sized trees, and I was down to falling the last two..The first one fell right where I wanted it,the second one twisted as it fell, and took off part of the roof...Luckily,I had 3 grand in the job,and it cost 2500 bucks to repair the damage...It happens to the best of us.

good hear'n you fellas.

she called the office too and snapped on the lady at the desk. what a jerk.
relax lady its the top of your chain link fence. told her it'd be an easy fix.
i could only imagine the nightmare if i bit something of real value.

maybe she got nothing else to break balls about. if i remember correctly her husband was deaf and had the ability to ignore her.

lol

it is important though to fix your F ups. learned that the hard way.

again good to hear from the boys on this one.

be right

I wouldnt of left that job before I had fixed the fence myself. Fence stores are within miles apart around here. Home or not, I would of told the owner about the mistake and showed him/her it's as good as new. Better to settle a boiling pot before it gets too hot

Regarding insurance. My car got broken into a few years ago. They stole thousands worth of climbing gear and camping gear. It was quite ridiculous.

My insurance covered the replacement cost of everything. That meant that if I had a $300 saddle in there that was 5 years old, they'd give me maybe $150 for it. Then if I actually went out and BOUGHT a new saddle, sent in the reciept, they'd give me the other $150.

That's ridiculous for him to have gotten all that money ESPECIALLY when you were willing to do it for FREE.

Did that affect your insurance rates any? You deserve the right to fix it yourself. That's gotta be a law somewhere somehow.

Yes I did tell my insurance agent about it after I found out he didnt get a new shed ,shes who told me how much he got,he just said he got a "nice little check from the insurance"and she (the agent)even said it's fraud. But it was 2 yrs later.I guess thats the problem no one ever came out to look or back to follow up and see if he actually got it replaced it,seems as though hed have to turn in receipts or something, and yes my insurance did go up some, did piss me off though esp after i offered to replace it ,and would have, the same day out of my pocket,Lowes is a block away from his house,we could have had the old shed down and,a new shed set up before we left that day, I tried to do the right thing but he had to scam the insurance and MAKE $1,500.00 on a old crappy shed, and it's not like the guy was poor,he's a broker with a nice expensive house,2 new Lincolns in the drive and wearing a suit that costs prob more than all the clothes I own, just goes to show some people are just p.o.s. period!

Oldirty-that sucks man, but i'm sure most of us have been there. I hate those cheap chainlink fences with the green chainlink-i've bent the top bars on them just vaulting over the fence!!

The most expensive fence repair i've had-back when i was trimming, dropped a limb that got a branch caught between the slats on one of those wooden stockade fences. When the groundie went to pull it, he broke the top off on of the slats. No big deal-replaced the slat. No good-the homeowner said the new slat didn't match the "weathered" look of the rest of the fence. Replacing the panel didn't do any good either. Ended up replacing the whole fence-38 panels later! Learned my lesson though. And everything worked out ok-i kept the old panels and ended up selling them to a friend of mine that wanted a fence .
