Ok I have climbed more than I care to lately doing removals on my spurs and I have sprung many bucks to try to stay comfy to no avail. I bought Bashlin aluminums and buck pads and don't like the straight shank and the pads are good for a few trees then start digging in and you know the spot. I am now back on my steel kliens and am trying to decide on the caddi pads, or the stiff inserted pads,or just say the heck with it all and spring for carbon fiber gecks. I want this to be the friggin last time to switch. I am leaning toward the caddies or stiff inserted pads now but money is not the limiting factor so gecks if they truely are the cats meow would be considered. Please don't insult me with any non inserted pad as I have climbed on all them at one time or another and they all dig in.

I use buckinghams with the velcro wrap pads. I also slip small soccer shin pads down in my boots to cover my ankle bone eliminating 95% of the pain.

I use the aluminum caddies, they are great. I find the only thing I change is the calf strap on them sometimes. Geckos would be nice also though.

Rope, I use Caddy pads and Klein tree gaffs. Double up the comfort factor by placing a thin shin pad inside your climbing boot, just below the knee.

my ankles are fine the shank digs in to my shin side near the knee.

I find that to be my problem too. I use the steel Buckinghams and I just got a Weaver Double strap pad. I only climbed 2 times with them and I like it. However I am considering taking them to a shoe place and see if they can sew in a piece of leather on the inside. I think that might eliminate the rest of any discomfort as the pads start to break down.

LT...

ps. Not old enough to give up climbing a tree.

Man I'm telling ya, the Geckos ARE the cats meow. I have been using them for years with just shorts on in the summer. Just the stiff but crazy comfortable pad that comes with'em is all you need...I'm telling ya! :chainsawguy:

I am not going to tell you what you SHOULD do, old timer, I will get a pic of my spikes and then you tell me who is older.

My hockey pads, well , they got a little diesel oil on them and I haven't found new ones yet. With them you could pretty much cinch rebar down on your leg and stomp pretty much anywhere and anything like you was Robo-Climber. Stomp, Stomp, Stomp. Ever see that movies, just like that. All day long to, I once kick a tree down with my shin.

I am looking for a nice pair of kevlar pads like that. The hard plastic shell isn't the greastest, it slipps to much on the bark, which is good if you are trying to rail slide... which you would be able to do in those pads, either down a limb or the jib, the pads don't feel a thing.

Rope, I believe if you get any of the steel support pads or the aluminum cast caddy pads your discomfort issues will disappear.

Unfortunately, you need to determine whether you need a straight or off-set support. I cannot use the caddy pads because they are straight and they dig into my shins. I use the angled, steel pads and they lay flat on my shin. Even though they are not highly padded cause no discomfort whatsoever.

I'm not a real big fan of velcro in this situation. Buckles tighten nicely and are consistent; doesn't matter how dirty they get.

I agree Dmc. I use the caddy's and the angle one's with steel inserts. The caddy's do put more preasure on the knee because of the straight factor. I like them both.

I think Ekka did an experiment on all the goods including the new carbon fiber jazz and determined the caddy's the best, for what it's worth.

These are comfy . I just got a new set last week. The pads that is. The spikes work fine, I like em with fresh tips the best.

I still put the shin pad in too. I am telling you if homey with his leg cut open in the other post had a saw proof set the other dude's 11 year kid would have gotten that saw.

hey rope. i dont think the kliens fit the steel velcro wrap. i am in the bashlin with the steel velcro wrap, you know they are on but they dont bother you at all. just big...kinda. but i would recommend them as they are rather rugged.

i think you would like the geckos. they have the same shank as the klein right? rumor has it they are mighty comfy.

good hearing from ya.

The aluminum pads that mount rigid to the top really dig into my shin at the top.
The big pads with two straps used to work pretty good fpr me when I wore high boots and worked in smaller trees, but they started wearing holes in my legs.
Velcro straps start cutting off the blood and make my legs swell up and hurt.

Buckingham makes a steel cup with pading on the inside that swivels. For me this works the best. I get good movement and support.

I have never tried geckos.

i have the Buck Titaniums with steel insert velcro wraps.

i think they are pretty damn comfortable.only issue i ever had was with the bottom of my feet until i got good boots.

i tried the Geckos but they aren't big enough for my legs.i wish they made a larger size pad.other than that they seem excellent.

I spend a lot of time on spurs (Steel Kliens) and found that they would dig into the side of my calves. I bought a pair of Caddy Pads and love them. No more painful legs.
