Sorry, I'm new to this forum.

If people just do not anwser and/or they are ignorant, or just do not care? That is fine!!!!!

I Posted about a 038: if you don't care, if you don't know do not post either, or maybe if you can help thank you, ............

I am just trying to make some old stihls happy. In my past life I built 2-stroke racers for moto cross, so I know at bit about engines...if you can point me in the direction for parts, thanks!!!

If you can help me out it would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!

Best regards,

MP

No need to get excited. You won't get many responses that way.

Sources for parts.
1. dealer
2. ebay

UGH first lose the "tude" friend

First off, these guys I have found from experience will bend over backwards to help someone. Even if it's about one of my old outdated vibrating Remingtons. I know from first hand experience. The man you want is Lakeside, he is as close to a Stihl Genius as I've ever seen. He can probably hook you up with any part known for a 038. Welcome aboard. They will also tell a man to kiss off in a hurry if he shows up with a bad attitude.

038 cylinder, piston & rings kit

Ebay buy it now cylinder kit Item # 775337028 $139.00. That the help your needs?

I agree ...andy is the guy to talk to. I've owned a lot of 038's, but i've never tried putting a mag cylinder on a av or a pro. I know the cylinder bolt spacing is wider on the mag, but i don't know if you could just modify the cylinder to make it work. I know the stroke is the same on all 38's, but I don't know if there are any other issues you would run into.

Hi Gary,

Will try this again.....3rd time.........

038 supers (2), for free!!!! Looks to be good shape except scored pistons/cyl (# 27 torx is in other toolbox...) looking through muffler. VERY scored.......one pulls free the other is difficult

52 mm Magnum pistion/cyl assy cheaper and more abundant, BUT seems to be studs are different for 038 AV and 038 super. I have an 038 magnum but it is complete and lives at my parents farm , do not want to pull it apart to check if possible.

SOME sources list the parts as interchangeable. Some nice people here and otherwise have said no..........Is it just stud/bolt placement in the case and will a little work with a bridgeport on the cyl fix things or is there issues with gasket surfaces and pistion clearance too? Aftermarket sources list same gasket set/crankshaft for both?

In my past I built race engines for motocross bikes so I'm good with 2 strokes (honda/suzuki dealership)

It would be nice to RR with bigger/better/cheaper...........

Thanks in advance for any insight!!!!

In answer to all that,it remains a good question.I know for a fact an 038 Mag cylinder will not fit on a standard 038 case. Now as to the interchangeability with an 038 super and 038 mag,I have no clue.I never had both saws setting side by side to measure.I would assume the piston pin diameter size is the same but really don't know.

If however you are a whizz kid on a Bridgeport, about anything is possible.

I may be mistaken but I think, somewhere in the archives of this site, this subject has been discussed perhaps several years ago.Try a search using "038".I imagine the search results will be lengthy but you may be able to gleen some info.

Most of interchangability knowledge is intuative.I do much better on the old yellow saws than on the orange and white ones.

That is all I know on the subject, actually not too much.

Thanks Al. Have done a search here under 038.

Many posts here that they do not interchange, a couple that they will with "work". Problem is no descriptions of the "work "involved.

There are also sellers that claim they fit both and others that claim they fit one or the other...........

There is a NOS stihl assy for a magnum (52mm) I can buy. I might just go for it and see how it fits up with the supers, worst case is I have a spare for my 038 magnum. If that will fit, will buy aftermarket for the other 038 saw(s).

Now I'm P Oed

Prof, I was doing good till I read your post over and saw the part about you scoring two 038's for free! Now that just ant right. I couldn't get a wild thing for free, and before ya'll start on me, I don't want one (unless it's free) Nahh, forget it.

This is not the first time. I've a logger friend and thats how I got my 056s and 038 mag. " If they break down more than twice it costs me more in time to take them and get them fixed......have a look in the shed and take what you want"

The 038 Mag had sawdust in the carb and recoil, piston looked new from the exhaust port. It ran so good after I fixed it, I brought a new bar and chain.

The 056s were one good saw with bad ignition and two whipped parts pieces. Switching ignitions got a good runner from the three.

I can't wait till his 046/066s start giving him trouble..........
