Today I was taking down a good sized Siberian Elm, I had taken out one co dominant and was about 45ft up in the other one when I ran into a big nest of sticks. Since it was in a crotch that I had to lower the limbs out of I reached up and started pulling it out by hand. When out of nowhere I saw a small brown furry thing come flying out of the bunch of sticks. Yup, it was a squirrell, and he bailed out of the tree at 45 ft with nowhere to go. The little guy was spread eagle like a skydiver and frappped in on the deck with a big thunk!!! I couldnt believe the lil duffer would have made a jump like that, but then again he had nowhere to go. My groundie thought a hanger had hit the deck when he heard it hit, but I pointed out the unconcious rodent still in a spread eagle position on the deck. He just lay there for about 3 minutes, and then started slowly coming back to life. About 5 min. later the lil guy came back to life and scampered off the deck as my groundie was trying to catch him. Sorry bout harassing your relatives Rocky, but I honestly didnt know he was there.

Yup. They go into a spread-eagle position, and using the drag from that and their tail they survive almost any fall. They usually get knocked out, but most always come to, and scamper off.

i have seen squirrels make some truely amazing leaps out of trees to the ground to avoid me and other climbers. take falls much better than us anyway.

Saw one leap from one 80ft Oak to another at about the 70ft mark! What makes this impressive was the 3 Oaks we were pruning were leaning over a ravine!
That leap had to be over a 150ft drop to the ground!
Balzy little buggers but you have got to admire them!
