I would like to start a discussion with someone who has or has used a Oregon 511a Chain Grinder to sharpen Stihl RM and RS chains. I have read the specifications and the owners manual but have a couple of questions about the settings.

Example of the questions:

1. Do you ever use the 10 degree swivel on the base.

2. The 60 degree angle for the wheel on the RM chains does not seem to be enough.

I sure would appreciate some help from someone with hands on experience.

Mswabbie, at least some of the Stihl chains are sharpened before the cutters are assembled and some of those angles cannot be duplicated afterwards. You may have to settle for more generic angles. The end of the slot might be extended a bit, but I doubt it would be worth the extra gain. That Stihl does have a very sharp top plate bevel angle and it is about the fastest new chain. Yes, change the 10 deg. tilt when you switch sides. I believe my Tecomec is the same as the 511 Oregon.
