Hi all. Well, I just wore out the tip on my two month old Oregon bar. This has never happened to me before. Usually, my bars and tips last me a long time. Have any of you tried the new Woodsman Pro tips from Bailey's? I was wondering about them. Also, does anyone know if these are made by Cannon, since the Woodsman Pro bars are? I have heard that Oregon is turning to lesser grade steel. A neighbor of mine bought a new Oregon bar, and his chain wouldnt fit into the groove. It had stamped "made in Sweden" on it. So, he took it back, got a new one. Had stamped "made in Canada" on it. This one was fine. Unbelievable! Any help with the tip questions would be great.

Hey Steve ,

Last I heard a while back when I personally callled Cannon is that they make their own bars but use Oregon tips , but their bars are indestructible , other than Cannon bars I personally use Windsor's they last alot longer for me than Oregons.. Plus they have a 5 rivet tip compared to Oregons single rivet that has had tendencies to loosen up.. Just my thoughts.. I'd give Windsor a try. From what I have heard GB Bars are also pretty decent but I have nevewr had one so I cant talk on those

Sincerly , Rob

I agree, the 5 rivet windsor bar tips are more sturdy than those single rivet oregon brand things.

who wants a cheap little crappy bar when they can have a good one at 1/4 the price?

Oregon bars and chains just dont fit into my needs, they're too low grade, soft metal, lack of durability, I could go on and on about how I hate oregon products but I think I'll shut up now.

What are the quality bars you can buy for 1/4 the price of Oregon; I am sure many will be interested in your source.

Yeah, I`m all ears!

I`ve never had a single rivet tip loosen, how prevalent is this?

I will agree that Oregon bars aren`t what they used to be but if I keep my chain sharp they give me good service. I think they are a much better value when life is compared to cost than some of the high priced bars like Woodsman Pro or Cannon.

BTW, wasn`t it Cannon Dan that informed us that Cannon no longer uses Oregon tips but now use an Oregon compatible tip that is supposed to be much better?

Windsor Speedtip bars have been very good but since they have been owned by Oregon for a while now, how long before they are comparable in quality to Oregon PowerMatch bars?

Possibly the best bar for the money right now is the GB Pro Top. Priced competitively with Windsor and Oregon on-line prices but seem to last longer.

Good question. They already have put oregon LG cutters on Windsors 3/8 chain which are inferior to the windsor made teeth as far as hardness goes.
FWIW The latest windsor bar I bought as as good as always.

I meant to say that windsor bars are about 1/2 the price of woodsman pro brand
so I will correcty myself, I've found that for a lower price you can buy a decent Windsor bar from Baileys.
Windsor 36" .063ga bar, $53.95
Oregon 36" .063ga bar, $57.95
Woodsman Pro 36" .063ga bar, $129.95

Again, All this info is based is based on your YEARS of experience. I've got socks older than you.

"Windsor bar from Baileys."

Buy up now buddy boy, cuz when the container is empty those bars are all gone from Bailey's. It's closeout stock from what I was told.

Russ,

Didn't Cannon Dan say they were investigating an in house tip?
I'm probably wrong, I ususally am.

FWIW I've had two Oregon tips go bad (froze up) in the last 3 months but that may be operator error.
:D

Plus I stopped lubing my tip, guess it's time to get the grease out again.

Cannon makes their own tips now. I think it's in this thread.cannon thread
Oregon bars aren't great but They aren't the comlpete junk as claimed by those with YEARS of experience. Not the best quality but they seem to last ok as long as you don't cut rocks.

Newfie,

It may be an "in house" tip but whatever it is, it`s available now from Bailey`s. Spoda be better than an Oregon tip.

I`ve had several tips freeze up over the last year or two, several small Stihls(all laminated, no grease hole), two small Husky, also laminated but with grease hole( but I quit greasing after everyone said I was a fool, LOL) and a nearly new Windsor Mini Pro. That one pissed me off because they used to be a fantastic bar. No problem with any large bars of any manufacture though.

I don`t use my tips as felling levers though, wonder if that has any bearing?

Wow, another well thought out and insightful post.

I have a Stihl, Windsor, Oregon, and Cannon 36" bars. I have no idea which is the best. I would like to find a good 72"-84" bar. At the point I could care less about the brand. Everyone knows it's the size that matters. Heck buy Sabre's they still hold a chain.

Bill

Bill- Cannon is the only manufacturer that makes a bar that long, or has in the last twenty years. General bar and chain company made some in the late 60's and early 70's and they were of excellent quality if you can find an old-timer that still has some.

As far as modern bars go, I would highly recommend a person interested purchasing the best quality bar they can get for the money to go with a GB bar, preferably from Jeff Sikkema. I ran new GB bars head to head with Cannon and Oregon and GB won hands down. The funny thing is, the GB bar has a very soft "belly" but the rails are just rock solid. The Cannon bar failed after only 3 weeks of cutting and the Oregon bar only lasted 6 days. Both bars had to be dressed down and were never the same again. The GB bar went five months of cutting for six hours a day, six days a week before it finally needed attention.

Jacob,

I have a few new General bars also. There was a guy a few weeks back selling a 088 on ebay that he said he had 48'' and 72" Stihl bars. The longest I have ever seen made by Stihl is the 59" Duromatic. I believe I still have one in the shop that I have never used.

Cannon Tips

I have been researching tip problems for the past 5 years. I believe our bar is of the best handmade quality out there, on here some agree some dont- :). The biggest problem we face is the tip. Up until recently we first used the Oregon 3 rivot tip then we moved to the improved single rivot tip. The benefit to this is when running your Cannon you can find a replacement tip for it in almost any sawshop all over the world. If we have a uniquely shaped tip it will be hard to find in some cases.
Up until recently any quotes on tip manufacture have been outragously high making it impossible to get them made on our own. What I have found is there are only a few plants that are capable of assembling tips worldwide. Recently Cannon along with other partners have sourced a tip to be assembled in 3/8 (so far). Alone none of us could use the volume to make it worthwhile. This tip is a single rivot style and has been coming on our 3/8 bars since April. It has been in testing since last November. I have yet get a complaint even in the harshest of eviroments. With any luck the .404 version will be available this fall.
The main visable difference from the oregon is a larger internal bearing and the tip is rivoted together not spot welded. I am sure as time goes on we will get further feedback......and postings!

PS. I'll let the other partner using the same tip parts to speak for themselves.

best of luck, Dan
